Oaks and Derby update blog

May 30th, 2008 | No Comments »

The Oaks on Friday (June 6) is an extremely open looking race with no less than 10 fillies at 14/1 or less.

The Jim Bolger-trained Lush Lashes - as short as 5/2 and not guaranteed to stay - is poor value. Indeed it is quite possible that she may not even run.

The John Oxx-trained Katiyra makes some appeal. She ran a good race in the Derrinstown Stud 1000 Guineas trial at Leopardstown and will be well suited by the step up in distance. She is a filly with loads of scope.

Another worth noting is the John Gosden-trained filly Michita. By Dynaformer she was very impressive in taking the listed Height of Fashion Stakes at Goodwood. Her ability to act with elan around Goodwood bodes extremely well for coping with the demands of Epsom.

The way she accelerated away from her rivals was most impressive and her current price of 10/1 looks good value.

On the Derby front the Dee Stakes winner Tajaaweed has come in for sustained support following some impressive work at Newmarket.

Another to go well on the gallops recently is the Henry Cecil-trained Kandahar Run. His trainer is very pleased with him, feels he will get the trip, and has a serious chance.

Over in Ireland following a recent gallop at Leopardstown, Casual Conquest was cut to 5/2 favourite. He came clear of Unwritten Rule and Winchester over nine furlongs.

Connections will now have to decide whether to supplement him at a cost of GBP 75k.

Dual Guineas winner Henrythenavigator is as short as 4/1. Many feel that a horse showing such speed over 1 mile will not stay, however, his breeding would suggest he should.

His sire has got a St Leger winner and his dam is by Sadler´s Wells.

Saturday Haydock and York

May 30th, 2008 | No Comments »

Three of the most interesting races on Saturday are the Timeform Silver Salver and the JW Lees Stakes at Haydock and the Scottish Sprint Cup at York.

In the Silver Salver one that catches the eye is the Jeremy Noseda trained Perfect Polly a very promising filly by Effisio. She is a stable companion of Fleeting Spirit who was so impressive in the Temple Stakes last Saturday.

Indeed, she has form with Fleeting Spirit in the Group 1 Cheveley Park last autumn when running fourth in a fine finish. Fleeting Spirit was second.

Having her first run for Noseda she ran a satisfactory race on quick ground at Hamilton this month. Being by Effisio any easing of conditions at Haydock will be in her favour (there is plenty of rain about).

In the JW Lees it’s Al Qasi who makes appeal. He will appreciate the drop in grade and distance after his disappointing run in the Lockinge Stakes at Newbury.

Seven furlongs here, particularly if there is rain will be right up his street.

Others to consider are the Barry Hills trained Captain Marvellous, a head in front of Al Qasi at Leicester but is 2lbs worse off here, and course and distance winner Appalachian Trail.

At York the Scottish Sprint Cup is very competitive. One that should have a chance is the Brian Smart trained Fathom Five. He ran a promising third in his first race for nine months when behind Borderlescott and Desert Lord at Musselburgh.

As the two ahead of him finished second and third in the Temple Stakes last Saturday the form looks solid.

The front running Ishetoo is another to note. A very progressive sprinter last year he stumbled badly leaving the stalls at Thirsk on May 17. He did really well to get within 2.5 lengths of Manzila at the line.

Casey eyes Memorial joy

May 29th, 2008 | No Comments »

The great Jack Nicklaus hosts this week’s PGA Tour event - the top class Memorial Tournament - where we fancy big hitting Englishman Paul Casey to make some waves.

Casey’s CV boasts two solid efforts at the Ohio layout that traditionally features wide fairways and quick greens. The man with the Popeye forearms gets a 66/1 quote from totesport and that’s well worth an interest. Casey finished 18th here in 2006 and 31st last year but the most solid reason for following him here is Memorial’s similarities to Augusta.

With wide landing areas and quicksilver greens the Nicklaus-designed track generally suits players who do well on the Augusta masterpiece. Those who watched this year’s Masters will concur that Casey looked like a very plausible winner over the first three days.

One of the most important clubs in the bag this week is the driver and with that in mind languid Aussie Geoff Ogilvy gets our second selection. Not many drive it longer and straighter than the 2006 US Open champ. He has course pedigree having finished ninth here last year and proved he is bang in form with a seventh placed finish at Colonial last week. Grab some of that 16/1.

The official PGA Tour’s site is a great resource for statistics and the category labelled “total driving” that combines driving distance with driving accuracy is one to keep an eye on this week.

Boo Weekley currently sits in 10th spot on that list and there is no doubting this guy’s talent when he gets in the mix. Weekley, who says he will only play golf until he has earned enough money to buy a farm, has already won this year at Harbour Town. It must be a very big farm he refers to because he has bagged over $4 million in prize money in less than two seasons.

He is getting better all the time and we confidently expect him to improve on last year’s effort when he finished 29th. Get involved with some of totesport’s 28/1.

Portugal and Czechs look a great Euro 2008 dual forecast

May 29th, 2008 | No Comments »

Totesport’s staggering collection of Euro 2008 markets are enough to keep even the most fervent of punters researching the form for many a moon - not least the excellent Group Dual Forecast betting.

As we know 16 sides compete for Europe’s premier national football competition - split into four groups of four teams.

Group A containing classy Portugal and Czech Republic alongside Switzerland and Turkey looks ideal dual forecast material at 7/4.

Portugal head into the competition with one of the best recent pedigrees of any International side, having made the final of Euro 2004 and the semis of the 2006 Fifa World Cup.

It will be a big surprise if the side with the best player in the world - Cristiano Ronaldo and arguably the Premiership’s best defender - Ricardo Carvalho don’t top this section.

Second best team in the group by some distance is Czech Republic who of course famously came within a whisker of winning this competition in 1996 only to lose to an extra time Golden Goal against Germany.

The Czechs actually won the European Championships in 1976 as Czechoslovakia and although it is possibly asking too much to repeat that feat they should have enough quality to outwit the Swiss and Turkish in the group stages.

And let’s not forget they have the best keeper in the world by some distance - Petr Cech. Karel Bruckner´s side also finished top of their qualification group - ahead of Germany.

Hosts Switzerland are a poor side and have never gone past the first round in their two previous European Championship efforts. This is Turkey´s first finals since 2000 and they only just managed to scrape into the event ahead of Norway following a mediocre qualification campaign that included an embarrassing 2-2 draw with minnows Malta.

Hit Man to go the distance

May 23rd, 2008 | No Comments »

Ricky “The Hit Man” Hatton makes his much vaunted return to the ring on Saturday night as he takes on durable Juan Lazcano in front of nearly 60,000 fervent Mancunians.

It’s Hatton’s first bout since he was floored by Floyd Mayweather in Las Vegas at the end of last year, but despite the long odds-on quotes he may not find things so easy against the tough Mexican.

Amusingly known as the “Hispanic Causing Panic”, Lazcano has beaten some solid fighters in the past like Ben Tackie and Wilfredo Vazquez.

If the Hit Man isn’t at his very best he could well end up in a real rough-house brawl. We are confident the man from Hyde will eventually prevail but we expect this one to go the distance. Accordingly, the odds on Hatton to win on points look a super bet.

The Mexican has only been stopped once - way back in 1998 by Golden Johnson - and has not even been dropped since then. That’s an impressive stat and we fancy him to maintain that record at the City of Manchester Stadium.

Hatton’s lack of power was excusably exposed at a higher weight against Mayweather but there is a feeling that he doesn´t possess the “big dig” that would make him an all-time great at light-welterweight.

Instead, expect to see a hard-working belt-and-braces effort from the tireless 29-year-old as he puts on a show for his raucous followers.

On the same bill is flashy Paulie Malignaggi who is well worth taking note of. The New York Italian is being touted as a possible opponent for Hatton and his fast hands and silky boxing skills make him a certainty to beat plodding opponent Lovermore N’Dou.

Leeds United v Doncaster Rovers

May 23rd, 2008 | No Comments »

Eee-baa-guum. It´s Leeds United versus Doncaster Rovers in an all-Yorkshire League 1 Championship Play-Off Final, where Gary McAllister’s side will surely take all the beating.

Rovers and United delivered superb semi-final second leg performances to book their places at Wembley (Rovers winning 5-1 at home to Southend, United winning 2-0 at Carlisle). Donny fans and punters will be hoping they haven’t used up all of their goals in producing that stunning result.

With both teams clearly in top form a competitive contest is forecast but it is McAllister’s side who hold all the aces in terms of big game experience.

Leeds front man Dougie Freedman has plenty of experience of play-off finals and that is a huge plus for the Elland Road outfit.

Seven wins in their last nine games from McAllister’s men has seen the side return to the scintillating form which saw them start the season like a train.

Of course there are many who don’t believe that Leeds should be in the play-offs at all. Had it not been for the 15 point deduction they would have sailed into the Championship automatically.

Expect a huge Leeds travelling support to turn the Wembley game into a virtual home fixture for McAllister’s men - a factor that can only benefit them.

If you take the points handicap into consideration Leeds were 11 points better than Rovers over the course of the season and at odds of 6/5 to win in 90 minutes that makes them a sound bet indeed.

Tattersalls Gold Cup and the Irish 1,000 Guineas previews

May 22nd, 2008 | No Comments »

A superb card at the Curragh on Sunday features two Group 1 races - the Tattersalls Gold Cup and the Irish 1,000 Guineas.

Duke of Marmalade will be a warm order in the Tattersalls. He won the Group 1 Prix Ganay, the form of which is working out - the third horse there Sageburg beat the high class Darjina in the Prix D´Isaphan last Sunday.

Finsceal Beo and Red Rocks at their best would pose a threat but perhaps the biggest danger is the progressive Lucarno trained by John Gosden.

The 1,000 Guineas is a tough race to work out. If the Mick Channon trained Nahoodh was as unlucky as claimed in the Newmarket Guineas she will probably go close.

The third and sixth in the French 1,000 Guineas were both trained by Aidan O`Brien - Halfway To Heaven and Psalm Run.

The former ran an excellent race, having only her third outing she chased the very strong pace (run in a record time) all the way.

The winner of the Musidora Stakes, Lush Lashes, steps back in trip and if taking her chance is worth considering.

Caribbean Sunset from the powerful Dermot Weld yard ran an excellent trial for this when winning a Group 3 at Leopardstown recently.

Previously she had beaten Halfway To Heaven a head over seven furlongs. She is improving and could well get involved.

Saoirse Abu trained by Bolger has the best form. She won the Group 1 Moyglare Stakes over seven furlongs as a two-year-old. Her third in the Newmarket Guineas, beaten a length, having been hampered in the closing stages, was an excellent effort. In an open race Saoirse Abu is the selection.

Irish 2,000 Guineas preview

May 22nd, 2008 | No Comments »

Saturday at the Curragh sees the first of the Irish classics - the 2000 Guineas - and what a race it promises to be.

With first and second at Newmarket again in opposition, will the outcome be the same or will Jim Bolger´s New Approach gain his revenge over the Aidan O´Brien trained Henrythenavigator?

At Newmarket New Approach adopted his usual front running tactics which previously had been so successful. The son of Galileo travelled extremely well going into the last quarter of the race with a two lengths lead.

He was staying on really well only to be beaten by the shortest of short heads by the O´Brien colt under an inspired ride from Johnny Murtagh.

It would appear that Henrythenavigator requires good fast ground to run to his optimum. He was beaten by three lengths by New Approach over seven furlongs as a two-year-old on soft ground and his best performance was on fast ground in the Coventry at the Royal Meeting.

With watering having taken place on the Curragh and some rain forecast easy ground is a distinct possibility. It is worth remembering that just past the post at Newmarket New Approach was back in front and it was the superbly timed challenge of Murtagh that won the day.

Can he repeat the effort at the Curragh? All in all it looks like New Approach will come out on top.

This is by no means a two horse race. Ibn Khaldun represents Godolphin who have won the race twice before with Dubawi (2005) and Bachir (2000).

The winner of the Racing Post Trophy will have to have improved considerably from Newmarket and that is not impossible as the stable has hit top form winning the Group 1 Lockinge last Saturday.

New Approach is the selection.

Angel will show punters mercy at Wentworth

May 21st, 2008 | No Comments »

The European Tour´s flagship event - the BMW PGA Championship - comes to a climax this weekend - where the continent´s finest battle it out at wonderful Wentworth.

Course re-designer Ernie Els tops totesport´s outright betting but the big South African is worth opposing given his obvious decline over the past two years.

Far better value lies in the form of big hitting Argie Angel Cabrera who claimed this event in 2005 with a spectacular display on Wentworth´s finishing pair of par 5s.

The 2007 US Open champion also has a second (2004) and a fifth (2007) on his Wentworth CV. Jump in for some of the 25s that is available.

The tree-lined Surrey course is very much a specialists´ track. Players either love it or hate it. Padraig Harrington has effectively stuck two fingers up to organisers by staying away this week citing that he just doesn´t enjoy the lay-out.

But another Irishman, Darren Clarke, has shown an affinity for the place. Big Darren´s best finish here was a fourth in 2004 but there have been promising recent signs that he is once again ready to dine at golf´s top table.

His last three finishes read, 16, 22 and 1 - a much awaited win at the BMW Asian Open in Shanghai. Clarke finished third and fourth two weeks running in South Africa earlier on this season to give us signs of what was to come and his quote of 33/1 is well worth investment.

With Wentworth having previously thrown up shock 200/1 winners like Andrew Oldcorn, Scott Drummond and Ignacio Garrido our final pick is 150/1 shot Charl Schwartzel.

The Johannesburg-born player has scant little form at Wentworth but then neither did the three rags aforementioned. But at just 23 Schwarztel is twice the player they will ever be and his long hitting, like Cabrera before, could well see him get in the mix.

Jim’s the pick at Colonial

May 21st, 2008 | No Comments »

Yet again totesport are first on the tee when it comes to golf betting and this week´s US Tour event - the Crowne Plaza Invitational - throws up some tasty outright prices.

The Colonial course in Fort Worth, Texas, is a venue that time and again rewards accuracy rather than power and that´s something to keep at the front of our punting minds when sifting through what looks a decent field that includes Phil Mickelson and Jim Furyk.

Furyk gets our first selection at 14/1 on account of his brilliant second place here last year when he was touched off in a play-off by cocky South African Rory Sabbatini.

The ultra-reliable Pennsylvania man has finished in the money places three times this season and it would be no surprise to see one of the tour´s straightest hitters make that four here.

The former US Open winner took a week off after The Players´ Championship and will tee up as fresh as a daisy this week.

Second selection goes to classy iron player Jeff Quinney 66/1 who has already trousered $1.6 million in prize money in 2008 thanks to 2nd and 3rd at the Northern Trust Open and The Players´ Championship respectively.

Colonial is a course that Quinney showed some promise on last term with an opening round 65. Twelve months on and with his tour card now secured we expect to see the 2000 US Amateur Champion feature near the top of the leaderboard.

Our final pick is 50/1 Aussie Nathan Green. Green has played this course twice and finished in the money places on both occasions.

The 33-year-old hasn´t exactly set the heather alight in 2008 but a 3rd at the Honda Classic showed us that he is more than capable of really turning it on when it matters.
