Sunday Premier League: Villa and Blacks Cats looking good

August 29th, 2008 | No Comments »

The presence of Gareth Barry on the pitch is sure to grab the headlines for Aston Villa´s match against Liverpool on Sunday.

The on-off-on-off transfer saga was one of the big summer stories but put aside the hype and make yourself a few quid by backing Villa to grab all the points in their Birmingham stronghold.

Anyone who has watched Liverpool´s performances this season will be fully aware of just how badly they are playing despite a 100% start to their Premier League campaign.

But in football you can only ride your luck for so long. The efforts of Rafa Benitez´s boys in scraping past Standard Liege was very disappointing against supposedly vastly inferior opposition. What would Man Utd, Arsenal or Chelsea have done to Liege over two legs?

Villa lost to a surprisingly impressive Stoke City last week but in their excellent opening day 4-2 win over Man City they spelt out that they are going to be a serious proposition at home.  Take the premiership odds on the Villains.

Roy Keane´s Sunderland are also in action on Sunday where we fancy them to beat visitors Manchester City at the current football odds.

The Black Cats were brilliant in winning at Spurs last weekend and they can oblige again against a City side that has been known to suffer from travel sickness in the past 12 months. The 4-2 loss at Villa Park points towards more away day agony this season.

Sunderland have spent fortunes this season in an effort to make solid inroads into the top half of the table.

Anton Ferdinand is the latest recruit following a GBP 8 million move from West Ham. An assured debut from him at the back and some fireworks up front from El Hadji Diouf and Djibril Cisse will be enough to get past City.

Chester Handicap - 1m 5.5f Chester Saturday

August 28th, 2008 | No Comments »

This has been a poor race for favourites with only one successful in the last 10 years. However, it usually goes to a well fancied runner with an average winning SP return of just under 5/1 over the decade.

Recent form is not essential with 25% having won and 37% having been placed over the last 10 years. No trainer has been particularly dominant with Luca Cumani, Michael Jarvis, Sir Michael Stoute and Mark Johnston all having had one success (Cumani was successful with the 11/8 favourite Bauer last year).

The two that catch the eye here are the Stoute-trained Sugar Ray and the Godolphin horse New Guinea. At Ascot on July 27 Pippa Greene had Sugar Ray 3 3/4l back in eighth place over 1m 4f. However, Sugar Ray failed to get to the front that day and can be forgiven.

If he manages to assume his preferred front running role around here he will take all the beating, check out his horse racing odds.

However, if he has a high draw that will be no easy task.

The Godolphin horse New Guinea won this race two years ago as a 3-y-o when trained by Jarvis so his ability to handle the track is assured and is well worth inspection with totesport´s online betting. He has been running well in Dubai this winter over a probably too short 1m 4f so the step back up to 1m 5f here is sure to suit.

While this is his first run since February the Godolphin operation are well able to have them ready to perform after a break. He is the selection.

Solario Stakes Group 3 Sandown Saturday

August 28th, 2008 | No Comments »

A very interesting Group 3 for 2-y-o´s that hasn´t been kind to favourites with only two obliging in the last 10 years.

Recent form has been important with 40% successful and 60% placed in their previous outings.

John Gosden has been the most successful trainer with three winners from four entries in the past decade (successful last year with high class miler Ravens Pass).

Richard Hannon has had two winners from eight entries. Clive Brittain, Mark Johnston, Sylvester Kirk and Brian Meehan have each scored once.

Gosden´s Doctor Crane was workmanlike in winning his first two races but disappointed behind Kirk´s Talking Hands at Ascot.

Talking Hands disappointed himself in his next race at Ripon on gd-sft over 6f.

The two we like are Johnston´s Cry Of Freedom and Jeremy Noseda´s Parisian Art. Parisian Art, who cost 130,000 Gns as a yearling, is out of a half sister to the top class winner of the Cheveley Park Stakes (6f) Seazun but showed plenty of stamina when cruising to a 5l victory at Newmarket over 7f on July 26 on his racecourse debut.

He certainly looks an exciting prospect with totesport online betting.

Cry Of Freedom by the Dubai World Cup winner Street Cry is very stoutly bred, his dam having won over 1.5m. He was quite impressive when winning over 7f at Newbury last time but previously seemed to need all of the 7f on gd-fm at Sandown.

Perhaps he is ready for a step up to 1m and Parisian Art is the selection.

Villegas for victory in Boston

August 27th, 2008 | No Comments »

Exciting Colombian Camilio Villegas, at golf odds of 33/1, is our headline tip for this week´s Deutsche Bank Championship in Boston.

The yoga practising player continues to improve with $1.5 million already banked in prize money this term and his record at TPC Boston is very useful.

His two best finishes from three visits are a 12th and a 9th (last year that included a stunning 63).

The attacking lay out clearly suits his game and it would come as little surprise if he were to claim his maiden Tour win here.

Incidentally, Villegas warmed up for this event by claiming the charitable Notah Begay III Foundation Chip In Challenge at Turning Stone Resort’s Atunyote Golf Club earlier this week.

TPC Boston features wide fairways that really suit the longer divers who on tighter tracks struggle for accuracy. Every man in last year´s top 10 drove the ball an average of 287 yards or further off the tee over the four days.

Our previous selection Villegas fits that bill and so does big hitting Argie Angel Cabrera. The 2007 US Open champ has re-found some much needed consistency with three consecutive cuts made and has all the attributes to succeed around the par 71 track.

His debut 23rd last year was achieved with a nightmare final round of 75 and he looks a cracking bet at 50/1 with totesport online betting.

Finally, have a saver on Fijian Vijay Singh. He won last week´s Barclays and is a man to follow now he has regained the winning habit. At 14/1 he´s far better value than co-faves Phil Mickelson and Sergio Garcia.

Safina can go all the way in New York

August 25th, 2008 | No Comments »

Dinara Safina, recent Beijing Silver Medalist and sister of our men´s tip Marat, has all the traits to make a bold challenge at the forthcoming US Open.

The big serving Russian has been in brilliant recent form with tour wins in Los Angeles and Montreal and rates an outstanding bet at tennis odds of 9/2.

Since arriving on the professional scene her career graph shows a steady upward curve with her best professional achievement to date a French Open final earlier this season.

But her recent successes, coupled with positive memories of a QF finish at Flushing Meadows in 2006 (she also won the doubles event last term), means she rates as a serious customer over the forthcoming fortnight.

Have a nibble with those totesport tennis betting odds on Safina.

With Maria Sharapova absent through injury there is no doubt that front runners Venus and Serena Williams will fancy their chances, as will Ana Ivanovic and Jelena Jankovic (all of whom are available at single figure odds).

But at much bigger sports odds have a look at young Dane Caroline Wozniacki.

Only 18 she claimed the Nordea Nordic Light Open at the start of August and arrives in New York in confident mood.

The daughter of Polish parents is a certain future star and it would be no surprise to see her make a real mark in New York.

At online sports betting odds of 33/1 she has the class to make a bold run to the latter stages.

Outsiders worth support in Big Apple

August 25th, 2008 | No Comments »

It´s the last tennis Major of 2008 where Spain´s Rafael Nadal will start as totesport´s online betting favourite.

What a season it has been for the Mallorcan. With fine wins at the French Open, Wimbledon and now Gold in Beijing.

He´s the deserved jolly and with doubts over Roger Federer´s form and Novak Djokovic so unpredictable Nadal will really fancy his chances in the Big Apple. But at odds of 5/4 we think we can locate a bit more bang for our buck at Flushing Meadows.

Marat Safin is available at tennis odds of 80/1 with totesport and given his pedigree at this event we think he´s well worth an each-way stab.

The big Russian won here eight years ago and although he claimed the Australian Open title in 2005 he has generally flattered to deceive.

However, at Wimbledon just two months ago he gave us signs that there may be a little bit left in his Major locker.

He bowed out in the semis to Federer in straight sets but he could easily have taken that match deeper with more luck in a tie break.

He famously delivered a celebratory crate of vodka to the press room when won in 2000 and if he gets on a roll he might just give us another reason to toast the likeable Muscovite.

At huge tennis odds of 100/1 David Nalbandian is worth interest.

The man from Argentina tasted success here as a youth when he claimed the junior US Open title.

Adept on clay, grass and hard courts he has defeated Federer and Nadal inside the past year and holds a 2-0 match win record over the Spaniard and a respectable 9-10 match deficit against the Swiss.

Pompey can halt United charge

August 24th, 2008 | No Comments »

Manchester United got off to an iffy Premier League start drawing 1-1 at home to Newcastle and they may well struggle to bag three points as Sir Alex Ferguson takes his team to Portsmouth on Monday night.

Shorn of Cristiano Ronaldo the Red Devils looked a pale shadow of the side that stormed to the title last season and the Portuguese star continues to be absent from the squad as he recovers from injury.

Carlos Tevez returns to provide striking support to Wayne Rooney but that might not be enough to get the better of Harry Redknapp´s boys.

That´s because Pompey have a great Fratton Park record against the Red Devils.

In their south coast fortress they have won three of their five Premier League games against United losing only once.

Totesport have a plethora of online football betting opportunities available.

As ever Redknapp has made some shrewd signings over the summer and we expect Peter Crouch to form a dangerous partnership with Jermain Defoe. But it is in midfield that we expect Pompey to gain the upper hand on Monday.

Brilliant French midfielder Lassana Diarra will definitely start after recovering from a knock against Chelsea and with Michael Carrick out for United he should dominate against the likes of John O´Shea and Darren Fletcher.

That dominance in the centre of the park should be enough to ensure Pompey bag a point - which is available with totesport´s online betting at 12/5.
