City slickers can nail Latics

September 28th, 2008 | No Comments »

Manchester City´s hot league streak looks set to continue as Mark Hughes takes his rapidly improving side to the JJB in the later game on Sunday afternoon.

The Eastlands outfit have now won three of their last four Premier League matches - knocking in an impressive12 goals in the three wins.

That haul was eyecatchingly beefed up by last week´s 6-0 home win over Portsmouth. The victory was City´s biggest win in nearly 40 years.

Anoraks may point to the fact that City have never beaten Wigan in the Premiership (drawn two, lost two), but City have never had a player like Robinho in their side either!

The Brazilian combined with compatriot Jo to devastating effect in the Pompey mauling and it´s hard to imagine that they won´t score.

On recent form Steve Bruce´s Wigan appear to be no pushovers and are sure to attract online betting support.

At present they are unbeaten in five league and cup games with three wins and a brace of draws.

But drill down a little deeper into the stats and it is interesting to see that the Latics have only picked up three home points from an available 15.

The JJB boys have only scored once at home this term and we have to believe that their lack of home goals will see them undone by a rampaging City. totesport´s football odds about a win for Hughes´s team look too good to resist.

MEON VALLEY STUD FILLIES’ MILE (GROUP 1) ASCOT SATURDAY

September 25th, 2008 | No Comments »

This has not been a great race for favourites with only three obliging in the past decade. However, it is usually won by a well fancied filly with nine of the last 10 winners coming from the first three in the betting - returning average racing odds of 3.3/1.

The five most successful trainers over the 10 years have been John Gosden with three winners, Aidan O´Brien with two winners, and Clive Brittain, Luca Cumani and Sir Michael Stoute with one win each.

The three we like in Saturday´s renewal are Golden Stream, Fantasia and Rainbow View.

The Stoute trained Golden Stream - owned and bred by the Queen ran an eye-catching race first time out. Sired by Saddlers Wells out of top class mare Phantom Gold she took up the running after 2f and kept finding more to win by 1l in a juvenile time course record at Newmarket (July course). She must have a very bright future.

The Luca Cumani trained Fantasia is also by Saddlers Wells. She has looked impressive in both her starts particularly last time when winning a Group 3 over 7f at Goodwood. The step up to 1m should be ideal and will no doubt attract online betting support.

John Gosden´s Rainbow View looks exceptional. This Dynaformer filly, a very late foul (May 21) made her debut at Newmarket on July 18 and spread-eagled a decent field winning by 6l. She repeated the performance three weeks later again at Newmarket over 7f winning as she liked by 6l. Last time in the Group 2 May Hill Stakes over 1m on soft ground she again won very easily.

She is a very exciting prospect and is the selection.

QUEEN ELIZABETH II STAKES ASCOT SATURDAY BLOG

September 25th, 2008 | No Comments »

The Queen Elizabeth II Stakes race, run on the round course at Ascot on Saturday, promises to be a superb affair and you can find all the best racing odds at totesport online betting.

While it may be unwise to dismiss the older horses at this year´s renewal (older horses have been successful in five of the last 10 runnings) it would seem to rest between the 3-y-o´s Henrythenavigator, Ravens Pass and Tamayuz.

The Aidan O´Brien trained Hentrythenavigator failed in his attempt to win a fifth consecutive Group 1 in the Prix du Moulin finishing fifth.

That was on soft ground, however, and he is much more effective on a faster surface having previously beaten Ravens Pass a head at Goodwood on good-firm. The ground should be perfect for him on Saturday and this dual Guineas winner will be hard to beat.

The John Gosden trained Ravens Pass ran another fine race last time landing a Group 2 at Goodwood offering some hope that he might improve past Henrythenavigator. But we think this is unlikely.

The Freddie Head trained Tamayuz has had a great season losing only once when there were valid excuses. Subsequently ridden much more positively he beat Ravens Pass 1.5l in the Prix Jean Prat and impressing greatly to win last time out in the Prix du Haras de Fresnay-le-Buffard - Jacques le Marois.

Dave Bonilla had the Nayef colt handy the whole way and travelling very easily he went clear from the filly Natagora and the Group 1 winning Sageburg back in fourth. Tamayuz is the selection on the back of that fine effort.

Kim the King of East Lake

September 24th, 2008 | No Comments »

Who needs Tiger Woods you could hear America’s adoring Ryder Cup fans hollering as Anthony Kim produced one of the most impresive match-play displays for many a moon to take care of Sergio Garcia.

Trounced, thrashed, hammered are not the sort of words the Spaniard is used to hearing in defeat but they are just about the only ways to describe his 5 & 4 pasting to this future titan of the game.

Readers of these pages know just how highly we rate AK - we had him down as our top US Points scorer tip  - and although he fell just shy of that prediction we reckon this week’s Tour Championship is within his compass.

East Lake golf club is unfamiliar territory to this dual 2008 winner, but then again so was Valhalla and just look what happened there. Kim’s all round talents mean he has the tools to shine on any kind of lay out and the straightforward Georgia track, with its 23 under winning score from Woods in 2007, holds no fears.

We believe that the confidence instilled from his Ryder Cup expolits will set Kim on course for a Major victory within the next 18 months. Take him at tasty golf odds to bag this mini-major.

Another man on a Ryder high is Hunter Mahan who actually finished fifth at East Lake last term. Mahan was a huge success at Valhalla finishing as top points scorer and given his huge current confidence, outstanding present form and great course memories he is a must for the staking plan.

It is hard to think that many were calling for Mahan to be axed from the Ryder Cup following his controversial slaves comment. At the current online betting golf odds he looks a cracking punt.

Ross looks the boy at the Belfry

September 23rd, 2008 | No Comments »

Big hitting Ross Fisher looks ripe for a bold challenge of this week’s Quinn Direct British Masters at the Belfry.

The Wentworth-based professional has come on leaps and bounds in the past 12 months and could possibly consider himself unlucky not to make the European Ryder Cup side given his two wins in the past 12 months.

His massive drives see him comfortably placed inside the top 10 of the European Tour stats for distance but it is worth remembering that his driving accuracy is superb for a man of such prodigious length.

At the Belfry that potent combintion of distance (Angel Cabrera and Johan Edfors other big hitting past Belfry winners) and accuracy can be a huge assett and we only have to look at last year’s winner - Lee Westwood  - to see why.

The Ryder Cupper hit 72% of fairways and drove the ball an average of 291 yards en route to a landslide five shot victory last year. Runner-up Ian Poulter and third place Mark Foster were also high up in those respective stats.

Fisher disappointed with a missed cut in 2007 but given his rapid improvement we are prepared to overlook that effort. Help yourself to some of totesport’s superb 22/1 online betting golf odds.

With big prize money knocking about it is no surprise to see several of Europe’s failed Ryder Cup men teeing it up. Westwood is back to defend his crown  and Ulsterman Graeme McDowell will be looking to build on his sound Valhalla efforts.

But given that fatigue and jetlag have to be a factor  it’s another Irishman who completes our punting portfolio this week.

Darren Clarke knows the Belfry like the back of his hand and a week off with  few Guinnesses (and Marlboro Lites) in front of the box watching the Kentucky spectacular was big Dazzler’s ideal kind of preparation. Jump on those Clarke golf odds.

Hopefully you followed our advice last week  and backed the USA – the financial reward was  a nice consolation to defeat for most of our European readers.

Europe 8/11 to win back the Ryder Cup

September 22nd, 2008 | No Comments »

Totesport believe that Europe will have no problem winning back the Ryder Cup in two years time, going as short as 8/11 for a home victory at Celtic Manor.  The USA are industry top price 11/8.

Paul Petrie, totesport spokesman commented, “For the first time a home captain has set everything up to give as much advantage to his team as possible and it was a great performance by Paul Azinger.  We believe, if Europe takes that lead, and makes Celtic Manor as advantageous as possible for their players, there will be only one winner.  Add in Ian Woosnam as captain and the Americans would be as well not turning up!”

Meanwhile, the firm we left happy with their decision to push the European team out to even money in the lead up to the competition.

Petrie added, “Nick Faldo said it was all about fractions and to be fair the final score probably flattered the Americans.  However, we felt that everything was falling right for the home team and are delighted with the result.”

**Ryder Cup – 2010

8/11 Europe

11/8 USA

9/1 Tie

Wigan can cause Tottenham problems

September 20th, 2008 | No Comments »

Twelve months on and millions upon millions spent, it´s still the same sorry story for Tottenham Hotspur.

Former boss Martin Jol ruthlessly got the boot for his poor start last season yet few are questioning Juande Ramos despite this being the worst Premiership start of all time from the north Londoners.

Thankfully us punters can question the Spaniard by backing Wigan at football odds of 4/1 with totesport online betting to heap more woe on the White Hart Lane outfit.

With a record of one win in 11 Premier League outings it´s almost impossible to make a case for backing Spurs.

Rock bottom of the table with only one point is not good enough for a side that harbours Uefa hopes. Talking of the Uefa Cup, did you see Tottenham´s laboured display against Wisla Krakow in midweek?

They huffed and puffed against second rate opposition for most of the match and needed a second half Darren Bent header to eke out a 2-1 victory.

Wigan are a much better side than Krakow and have looked highly useful on the road this season. They thrashed Hull 5-0 on the last away day and their performance merited something better than the eventual 2-1 defeat at West Ham in the opening game of the season.

Egyptian hit man Amr Zaki looks a great signing and alongside Antonio Valencia the Lancashire side have the makings of a lethal front pairing. We expect them to do some damage at the Lane.

Chelsea can increase gap on Red Devils

September 19th, 2008 | No Comments »

Manchester United will find themselves a gaping NINE points behind Chelsea should they lose to the high flying Londoners on Sunday.

That´s the nightmare scenario for manager Sir Alex Ferguson who takes his side that fortress of a venue, Stamford Bridge, this weekend.

The Londoners boast and unbeaten record of 84 home Premier League matches. Indeed, Roman Abramovich´s club haven´t suffered a league defeat at the Bridge since losing to Arsenal in February 2004.

If United are to make any impact they will need to produce a far better performance than they did in losing 2-1 at Liverpool last Saturday.

But it doesn´t look good. Nemanja Vidic is suspended and that means we will see a makeshift centre half in the form of Gary Neville or Wes Brown next to defensive mainstay Rio Ferdinand.

Chelsea, on the other hand, are in fine fettle. Their 4-0 win over Bordeaux on Tuesday is further evidence that Felipe Scolari´s men are starting to fire on all cylinders.

That´s a scary prospect and one that should alert punters to take those football odds of 5/4 for Chelsea to avenge their Champions League final defeat with victory.

totesport´s online betting lists Nicolas Anelka at 6/1 to score the first goal and given his last minute strike against the French outfit in midweek that´s a punt well worth a dash.

Mill Reef Stakes 6f Group 2 Newbury Saturday

September 18th, 2008 | No Comments »

This has been a good race for fancied runners over the past decade. Four favourites have obliged and the winner has come from the first three in the online betting on eight occasions.

The two we like here are the Brian Meehan-trained Gallagher and Marcus Tregoning´s Finjaan

Gallagher a 115k Gns purchase looked a decent type in making his debut at Chepstow on July 2 over 6f Gd-Fm winning by an easy looking 4.5l.

Stepping up in class to Group 2 level he may have been slightly unlucky when beaten a neck by the very useful Prolific at Goodwood on August 1.

He ran his best race last time in the Group 1 Prix Mornay at Deauville. He is most progressive and given an easy surface he should go close here at totesport´s great online betting odds.

Finjaan is a beautifully bred colt by Royal Applause. He showed great tenacity when holding on well to beat a field of very speedy types in the Group 3 Molecomb Stakes at Goodwood.

Back in May Icesolator from the Richard Hannon stable did beat Finjaan in a steadily run affair over 5f at Sandown.

The Tregoning horse took a very strong hold that day and has since progressed. Being out of a mare who stayed 7f well and considering the way he been finishing his races the step up to 6f should suit him well and he is the selection.

Ayr Gold Cup 6f Handicap Saturday

September 18th, 2008 | No Comments »

Ayr´s showpiece on Saturday looks a wide open affair.

It is worth remembering that no favourite has obliged since Coastal Bluff at 3/1 racing odds in 1996 and all subsequent winners have returned a starting price in double figures.

Remembering the significance the draw can have in this race (the effect of which may be more obvious after the running of the Ayr Silver Cup on Friday) the three we like are Hogmaneigh, Confuchias and Advanced.

The SC Williams-trained Hogmaneigh ran a superb race when winning the Portland Handicap at Doncaster last Saturday. On soft ground over 5.5f in a fast run race he got up to win in the shadow of the post.

His style of running always requires a touch of luck but only 5lbs higher here he must have a good chance.

KR Burke-trained Confuchias is another that will be very well suited by the likely soft ground. He ran a very solid race at Ripon in the Great St Wilfred last time “winning” the race on the less favoured stand side off his current mark of 100 (he eventually finished 1.25l behind Tajneed drawn on the far side).

Having won a Group 3 on heavy going over 6f in 2007 he looks well treated and must be seriously considered in the event of there being lots and lots of give in the ground.

The Kevin Ryan-trained Advanced also looks well treated. He won the race last year off a 5lbs higher mark. He ran a very promising race last time in a listed event over 5f when losing to the speedy Look Busy at Beverley.

A return to 6f on Saturday looks ideal and he is the selection.
