Arsenal favourites to continue North London dominance

October 29th, 2008 | No Comments »

The North London Derby is the live match offering tonight and with the recent goings on at White Hart lane there’s added an extra edge to this game.

Now it’s probably worth pointing out that as a Spurs fan it’s very difficult to remain impartial when discussing such a fixture. However, only a fool would back Spurs at the Emirates tonight.

That saying, totesport are happy to go best price Arsenal at 4/9 and it could be one to add toyour Premiership enhanced odds coupon.

Spurs do have the new manager syndrome and the Harry Redknapp factor but Harry would be the first to tell you that his record against Arsene Wenger is not the best.

Arsenal won this fixture rather fortuitously last season after a spirited Spurs team went down 2-1 after missing a penalty and conceding a late winner. Spurs did have Dimitar Berbatov and Robbie Keane leading the line that day however and scoring goals has been the main problem this season.

Redknapp played Luka Modric in behind Roman Pavlyuchenko and that seemed to pay dividends with the Croatian pulling the strings in the 2-0 win over Bolton. Modric is a 9/2 shot to score anytime with totesport.

From an Arsenal perspective, a win here is imperative. With defeat to Chelsea and dropped points from Manchester United at the weekend there 2-0 away win at West Ham pushed them right back in to contention.

They’ll be certainly pumped up for this one and if Cesc Fabregas’s claims that Spurs wouldn’t beat Arsenal ladies team is correct then this should be a cake walk. Truth is, they should win this one, but they should have beaten Fulham and Hull and we all know what happened there. Fabregas’s own personal humiliation at the Lane last January obviously still cuts deep and Arsene Wenger will be hoping these comments don’t come back to haunt him.

Race for the title is not a foregone conclusion

October 29th, 2008 | No Comments »

There’s a stellar line up at this weeks Volvo Masters at Valderrama in Spain and why not with €4.25m on offer for the top sixty European Tour players plus the Order of Merit title at stake.

Sergio Garcia cannot win the Order of Merit but has been installed as the 5/1 favourite with totesport after his fine victory last week in the Castello Masters. The Spaniard has never won the Volvo Masters but has three second places there in the past four seasons so should go close again this week.

Robert Karlsson leads the Order of Merit by a couple of hundred grand going into the tournament but with Padraig Harrington breathing down his neck and a mouthwatering €708k on offer to the winner there’s still some work to do. These two are 10/1 and best price 11/1 with totesport respectively but mathematically two more players have a chance of taking the title.

Lee Westwood is currently third in the rankings and Miguel Angel Jimenez fourth. It would probably take a miracle for the latter to win the title but he does have some course form at Valderrama. Winner here in 1999 and a top ten finish last season could see the 33/1 shot Spaniard gain another title to cap of a really good season.

Another 33/1 shot who could come from the pack is Rory McIlroy. The young Ulsterman has been knocking on the door with three top ten finishes in the last four weeks and will relish this chance to mix it with the big boys. He’s had a brilliant first season and it’d be the icing on the cake if he could make the top five here.

Red Rocks to turnover favs at Santa Anita

October 23rd, 2008 | No Comments »

Attention turns to across the pond this weekend for all horse racing fans with the Breeders Cup taking place Santa Anita.

A couple of races with European interest are the Breeders Cup Turf and the Breeders Cup Marathon.

The Breeders Cup Turf sees the Aiden O’Brien trained Soldier of Fortune share 4/1 favourtism with Conduit. Soldier of Fortune has been a real stable stalwart and connections are bullish here. He could however be one to take on as he prefers some cut in the ground and there’s doubts about the track and trip also.

Red Rocks stands out as one to oppose the favourites. The 11/2 shot looks to have been trained for this race and has two wins from three starts this season.

In the Breeders Cup Marathon, Sixties Icon is well fancied at 7/4 with totesport. Although the 1m4 is hardly a marathon he should have enough class to take the race here on the polytrack.

You can bet on the Breeders Cup at totesport.

English teams to go unbeaten in UEFA Cup

October 23rd, 2008 | No Comments »

It’s been a long week in Europe and the three remaining English clubs in UEFA Cup action tonight will be looking to go unbeaten.

Troubled Spurs travel to Italy to play high-flying Udinese. The Italians currently lie second in Serie A and the visit of rock bottom Spurs should make them a shoe-in. However, the traders make Udinese best price evens so it looks like they’re happy to take them on.

We think it’ll be a close low scoring match and perhaps the 4/5 about under 2.5 goals is the pick here.

Elsewhere, Villa host Ajax and Portsmouth travel to Portugal to face Braga.

Villa are a 5/6 shot in the betting and we think there’s some value there. Despite Ajax’s reputation and the obvious scoring talents of Klaas Jan Huntelaar I think the Villa will be too strong here so fill your boots on the home side!

Pompey meanwhile have another trip to Portugal. Harry Redknapp’s team needed two extra time goals from Peter Crouch to bail them out of trouble in the last round, but this looks an easier tie on paper and they’ll learn from the experience. The 6/4 on offer at totesport looks an absolute steal, with crouch a 6/1 shot to get the opener.

Totesport will be betting live in running on all three matches tonight.

Garcia the worthy home favourite

October 22nd, 2008 | No Comments »

It’s a strong field at this weeks European Tour event in Spain. Sergio Garcia heads the field at 11/2 in what is essentially his home club event. Garcia will know every inch of the Club de Campo Mediterraneo and is a worthy home favourite.

Stacking up behind him are some of Garcia’s Ryder Cup teammates, including Henrik Stenson, Paul Casey and Justin Rose, available at totesport at 16/1, 14/1 and 22/1 respectively.

After last week’s 40/1 pick finishing third in the form of Steve Webster, here are a few other bigger priced fancies for you to have a look at.

Consistent Frenchman Gregory Bourdy is another 40/1 shot and showed some good form in Portugal finishing 7th last week. David Howell is another player returning to form after injury and after a week off he could come back refreshed and finish in the top 5. The Englishman is a 50/1 chance with totesport and it would be great if he could get a big prize before the season is out.

English to continue Champions League dominance

October 22nd, 2008 | No Comments »

After pointers for Bayern and Arsenal in yesterday’s blog, there’s plenty more to get excited about tonight in the Champions League.

Liverpool travel to Madrid to play Atletico. The Spaniards head the group on goal difference but are reeling from two straight defeats in La Liga. A 6-1 defeat to Barcelona and a 2-1 home defeat against local rivals Real have left Javier Aguirre’s men reeling in the Spanish league.

That could effect tonight’s outcome with wholesale changes expected and a six point lead over the other two teams in Group D. Despite Liverpool traveling without Atletico olden golden boy Fernando Torres, they’re a good bet to take three points at 9/5 with totesport.

Chelsea host Roma at Stamford Bridge in the other game featuring British teams. Chelsea have an exemplary record at home in Europe and we expect nothing different tonight against a Roma team with a poor record in England. Chelsea are 4/9 to take the spoils but there maybe value elsewhere by backing them to keep a clean sheet at 4/5.

You can bet live in-running on both matches at totesport.

Celtic a good shout to score at 6/4

October 21st, 2008 | No Comments »

After the International break the football action is coming at us thick and fast and we have our very own battle of Britain tonight at Old Trafford.

Manchester United are a 1/4 shot to beat Celtic, who have never won an away match in the Champions League. If that price is a little too short for you, here are a few other bets that could tempt you to have a flutter on tonight’s game.

Wayne Rooney says he is in the form of his life and you can back him at 7/2 to score the first goal tonight, or 4/5 to score anytime with totesport.

Last time these two teams met at Old Trafford the score finished 3-2 to the home side and despite Celtic’s wretched away form in the competition, set piece specialists Shunske Nakamura and Shaun Maloney could convert if given the opportunity around the box. At 6/4 for Celtic to score a goal, that’s our bet of the night.

Elsewhere, Arsenal travel to Turkey to play Fenerbache. Defensive trio Gallas, Toure and Sagna are set to miss the match and this is reflected in the evens available on the away team. Fenerbache however have had a poor start to the season both in Europe and domestically and that even money on Arsenal represents the value here.

European giants Juventus and Real Madrid clash in Turin with totesport happy to lay the away team going best price 8/5. Another former Champions League winner Bayern Munich also look a decent price at 8/11 to beat Fiorentina.

Totesport will be betting in running on the Arsenal and Manchester United matches tonight.

14/1 for English Heineken Clean Sweep

October 17th, 2008 | No Comments »

We all know the English enjoy a beer and totesport is offering 14/1 that the English sides can record a clean sweep in this weekend’s Heineken Cup fixtures. In the last round, only a last minute penalty in Tolouse prevented Bath from completing a perfect start for the English teams.

Meanwhile, paparazzi fodder Danny Cipriani is the 7/2 outsider to score the most points between his fellow number 10’s, Felipe Contepomi, Ronan O’Gara and Luke McAllister.

Champions Day at Newmarket

October 17th, 2008 | No Comments »

It’s Champions day on the Rowley Mile this Saturday and it’s a real Autumnal festival of flat racing.

The Group One Dewhurst Stakes will see Irish raider Rip Van Winkle go off the likely favourite, despite trainer Aiden O’ Brien’s reports of interrupted preparations for the two year old colt.

Further down the betting, consistent sort Lord Shanakill could have a good each way shout. The Karl Burke trained colt won last time out in the Mill Reef Stakes at Newbury on good ground and an impressive performance here isn’t above him.

Derby winner New Approach is the star of the show in the Champion Stakes. He’ll be looking to do the Anglo-Irish double after winning the Irish Champion Stakes last time out and will have renewed the punters faith in him after an in-different performance in the Juddmonte here at Newmarket back in August.

The totesport.com Cesarewitch is the one of the biggest betting heats of the year and we don’t see this years renewal being any different.

Askar Tau is the well backed ante post favourite and available at 9/2 with the sponsors. Well in at the weights and off the back of a five timer it will take all the beating.

At longer odds, Daraahem at 25/1 catches the eye. barring the obvious question marks over the distance, he won in fine style in the mud at Haydock last time out and trainer Barry Hills knows what it takes to win a big handicap.

Last year’s runner up Carraciola is another interesting runner. The Nicky Henderson trained Cheltenham Festival veteran is a big price at 40/1 despite the weight and is sure to be staying on at the death.
