Cheltenham December Meeting Betting Preview - Day 2

December 12th, 2008 | No Comments »

After decent write ups for two winners on day one of the December meeting, concentration turns to Saturday’s big two races.

The 2m 5f Boylesports.com Gold Cup takes centre stage as the main betting heat of the day at 2.30pm. Imperial Commander looks to follow up his win here last month in the Paddy Power. The market leader is a 15/8 chance with totesport and still looks in at the weights to make it a memorable double for the Twiston-Davies stable.

Elsewhere, claims can be made for 16/1 chance Three Mirrors, who was giving weight to the winner when finishing fifth in the Paddy Power and goes off the same mark here this time.

Depending on the state of the weather, My Petra’s an interesting runner from the in-form Nicky Henderson stable. Two good wins including an eye catching reappearance over fences last time out at Ascot has seen the five your old earn a hike in the weights but could still be well in here. The biggest concern is over the going and as the rain comes the odds are currently on the drift, currently available at 14/1 with totesport.

The 3.05pm 2m 1f Boylesports.com International hurdle looks to be an entriguing Champion Hurdle trial with current ante post favourite in March Binocular, a 7/4 shot here. The Henderson trained bullet has shown imperious form since it’s defeat in the Supreme Novices at last years festival to Captain Cee Bee. Wins at Aintree and an impressive if unchallenged victory last time out at Haydock have seen the four year old’s price cut for this one and a win here will surely shorten his Champion Hurdle odds also.

Elsewhere, trio Crack Away Jack (4/1), Chomba Womba (11/2) and Katchit (4/1) will all be looking to capitalise on any weakness from the market leader. Katchit has shown little form so far this season but Saturday’s race will give us a better idea of his long term chances of defending his Champion Hurdle title in March.

I can’t let this piece go without a little mention of an old favourite and former winner of this race Harchibald. The Noel Meade trained 9 year old has struggled since winning the Fighting Fifth just over a year ago and the odds available of 28/1 could single the end of any serious Champion Hurdle aspirations.

Premier League Weekend Betting Preview - 13th Dec 08

December 12th, 2008 | No Comments »

The early kick off on Saturday sees Arsenal make the trip north to Middlesbrough (7/2). Boro have a good record at the Riverside versus Arsenal but their home form of late has been disappointing with only one win from six. Arsenal got their away form back on track last time against Chelsea, but a loss midweek to Porto still raises questions about their metal. Totesport have gone best price Arsenal at 4/5 so happy to take them on here, the draw is 5/2.

Aston Villa welcome Bolton down to the midlands as they look to take their away form back to Villa Park. Martin O ‘Neill’s young team have won their last two away matches but are winless in three at home. They’re a 7/10 chance to win on Saturday with in-form Bolton an attractive 4/1 shot. Another Villa Park draw has been priced up at 13/5 for this one.

Liverpool (1/3) look to end a dire home run of goalless draws versus lower opposition as they host surprise package Hull City (9/1 best price totesport). Both Fulham and West Ham have taken a point off the league leaders in the last two games at Anfield, plus Stoke held the Reds to a goalless draw earlier in the season. Hull are unlikely to keep a clean sheet but have enough creativity to trouble a misfiring Liverpool and the draw is an 18/5 shot.

Man City (11/10 best price at totesport) host Everton at Eastlands with only one win in their past six games. There home form isn’t as bad as their away form but after defeat here to Manchester United last time out they’ll be keen to get back to winning ways against an Everton side no doubt wounded from their last minute defeat to Villa last weekend. Everton have a good away record though and with three wins in their last four on the road they’ll fancy this and look backable at 12/5. The draw is 12/5 best price totesport.

Stoke (6/4 best price at totesport) will be looking to bombard their way to victory over a Fulham (9/5) side that’s yet to win away from Craven Cottage. Roy Hodgson’s side do have plenty of height at the back though to help cope with Stoke’s aerial threat and there are doubt’s over Rory Delap’s fitness. However, sixteen of Stoke’s nineteen points this season have been won at the Brittania Stadium and they’ll be keen to add to this tomorrow. The draw is 9/4.

Sunderland’s luck didn’t hold out at Old Trafford last week and will be looking for a morale boosting win at home against bottom of the league West Brom (12/5). West Brom have lost Ishmael Miller to injury and look even more toothless in attack than before. Despite Sunderland’s poor run of form and less we not forget, they’re currently managerless; that saying, they surely have enough quality on the final third to heap some more misery on Tony Mowbray and at 11/10 they look a nice prospect. The draw is 12/5 at totesport.

Paul Ince’s tenure at the helm of Blackburn Rovers (11/4) could come to an end if the form-books are anything to go by and Wigan take the three points at the JJB. Wigan are an evens shot in this Lancashire derby and with Rovers sitting bottom of the form table with only one point from a possible eighteen in their last six matches the omens don’t look good. The draw is 12/5.

The match of the weekend sees an understrength Manchester United (4/5) travel to a rejuvenated Tottenham Hotspur (10/3) in Saturday’s evening kick-off. With Evra and Rooney suspended and former Spurs’ Berbatov and Carrick injury doubts, Harry Redknapp will be getting his team charged up for this one. Spurs have taken points off of Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal so far this season and a home win here against a United team that have been a bit wobbly on the road this season is not beyond them. The draw and a repeat of last years result could be the bet at 13/5 best price totesport.

Sunday’s two live matches see Portsmouth host Newcastle and Chelsea host West ham. Newcastle (5/2) are winless away from St James’s Park and they haven’t exactly got many there either and last weeks draw at home to Stoke put paid to any thought of them turning the corner. Pompey are solid if not spectacular currently but the leading line of Peter Crouch and Jermain Defoe should be too hot to handle and the home win 21/20 looks a cert. The draw is 12/5.

Finally, there’s a London derby at Stamford Bridge with Chelsea looking to get back to the top of the table with a win over West Ham. Chelsea have scored 35 goals this season opposed to the Hammer’s 17, in fact, West Ham (11/1) haven’t scored a single goal since September! Chelsea’s home form has let them down this season but should collect here, although the 2/9 looks a bit skinny. The draw is available at 5/1 with totesport.

Cheltenham December Meeting Betting Preview - Day 1

December 12th, 2008 | No Comments »

After a chilly week it looks as though racing will go ahead at Cheltenham today ahead of the December meeting at Prestbury Park.

With tomorrow’s Boylesports Gold Cup and International Hurdle undoubtedly the highlights of the meeting, there’s plenty of racing betting to get stuck into on Friday and we’ve picked out some prospects from three of today’s races.

In the 12.45pm, the 3 mile handicap hurdle throws up a few interesting runners. Top weight Fair Along has gone up nearly a stone after his victory last time out at Cheltenham and this consistent front runner warrants respect at 7/1 with totesport. Probably totesport.org’s finest moment was tipping up Carracciola in the Cesarewitch at a massive 50/1 a few months ago. The Henderson trained veteran runs again here today and despite the trainers claims that he’ll have the stamina, there are concerns over the going unless things brighten up. At time of writing you can back Carraciola at 13/2 (second favourite) with totesport.

In the 1.20pm, we see another installment of the Cross Country saga with Enda Bolger fielding three runners at the head of the betting. Top weight and favourite Garde Champetre fell in this race last year when carrying a featherweight, but followed this up with three straight wins, including the cross country at March’s Cheltenham Festival. This has seen a significant rise in the weights and although unlucky to lose here last time out he could be taken on at 5/2. Bolger’s other runners at the top-end of the market include L’Ami (11/2) and Drombeag (7/1). The former, a runner in both the Gold Cup and Grand National looks to be one paced lately and couldn’t be backed with any confidence after its plodding fourth back here in November. Drombeag is a different kettle of fish though and taking a stone off the favourite, has serious claims here. A win and two places so far this season, everything seems to be in its favour, the only question mark being Nina Carberry’s decision to ride the favourite instead!

The big race of the day is the 1.55pm, with 10 runners going in this 3 mile 1f listed handicap chase. Plenty of the field will have entries next year’s Grand National and it includes last years National winner Comply Or Die (25/1). Mon Mome looks an interesting runner after finishing like a train at Haydock last time out, losing by a neck to another of today’s runners Possol. Both horses look well in at the handicap coming here and you can back Mon Mome at 8/1 and Possol at 15/2 with totesport. At a bigger price Irish Raptor could be excused its poor run on bottomless ground last time out at Aintree and at 18/1 could be worth an each-way shout.

Champions League betting - Matchday 6 - part 2

December 10th, 2008 | No Comments »

Tonight is the final round of Champions League matches before the last sixteen knockout stages in the new year.

Manchester United should see off Danish champions Aalborg BK, who are as big as 14/1 to win the game at Old Trafford. You can get a very short 2/9 on United at totesport to win and top Group E, but at that price they could be just one for your ‘accas’. The draw is 9/2.

The other game sees Celtic (13/10) host the other qualifier from Group E Villareal at Celtic Park. It’s been an awful campaign from the Scots and even a first win of the competition here won’t secure them third spot and a place in the UEFA Cup. Villareal (21/10) are already through to the knockout stages and with a chilly night up in Glasgow they can be opposed, the draw is 23/10 with totesport.

Arsenal have also secured qualification to the knockout stages with a game to play and travel to Group G’s other qualifier Porto. Arsenal (2/1) have not been at their fluid best of late despite a good second half performance against Chelsea they’ve struggled to wins against Wigan at the weekend and Kiev in this competition. The Gunners also rest a few of the first ‘teamers’ for this one so the draw at 11/5 or a home win (13/10) make more appeal in the betting.

The other game in Group G sees Dynamo Kiev host winless Fenerbahce (5/2) in the Ukraine. The 10/11 available at totesport about the home team looks the bet of the night here. The draw is 9/4.

Group F is another where two teams have already qualified meet in a dead rubber. Bayern Munich (17/10) travel to Lyon (13/10) level on points with their hosts but an inferior goal difference. Anything other than a win in France tonight and they’ll be amongst the second seeds in the last sixteen draw. The draw incidentally is 11/5.

Fiorentina (6/4) travel to Romania to face Steaua Bucharest (6/4) in the group’s other fixture. A draw will secure the Italian’s safe passage through to the UEFA Cup and is available to bet on at 11/5 with totesport.

Finally, Group H is another where all outcomes are already decided, so be careful when betting on these matches as it’s best to check the lineups first. Group winners Juventus (1/4) can round off a good return to the Champions League with victory at home versus BATE Borisov (9/1), whilst Real Madrid (evens) can get off to a winning start under Juande Ramos at home to Zenit St Petersburg (9/4). The draws are 18/5 and 9/4 respectively.

Australian Open Golf Betting Preview

December 10th, 2008 | No Comments »

After last week’s Australian PGA Championship, winner Greg Ogilvy heads the market at 13/2 to follow up his win in the Australian Open.

Ogilvy’s been in great form over the past few months and will take the beating here, but we’ve highlighted a few of the other runners to look out for from a golf betting perspective.

Two of the stalwarts of Australian golf, Robert Allenby and Stewart Appleby are 10/1 and 14/1 respectively and although they warrant respect, the prices look a bit skinny and based on reputation rather than form. Allenby blew a chance of victory in last week’s PGA and Appleby has failed to shine in his home events in recent years.

Other Aussies Marcus Fraser, Richard Green and Brendan Jones offer some value at 33/1, 28/1 and 40/1 respectively. Fraser finished second last week in the Australian PGA Championship and will have claims to finish in the places again here, whilst the latter two performed well at Mission Hills in the World Cup finishing third after a final round slump a fortnight ago.

If that hasn’t whetted your appetite for a good bet on this weeks golf, Darren Clarke has chances at 33/1 with totesport and John Daly is probably worth a small stakes each-way punt at 200/1.

Alfred Dunhill Championship Betting Preview

December 10th, 2008 | No Comments »

The European Tour (Race to Dubai) parks up in South Africa this week for the Alfred Dunhill Championship. There’s a decent field to pick from including Lee Westwood at the top of the betting.

Westwood is still searching for that elusive first victory of 2008 and he’s a 13/2 shot with totesport. The Englishman has been uber-consistent with numerous top ten finishes on tour this year and a runners up spot at the US Open. Could this week be the one to break his duck?

Second in the betting is 8/1 chance Charl Schwartzel. After successfully tipping up Henrik Stenson to win the Nedbank Challenge last week, we’re advising you take a piece of the 8/1 available at totesport on Schwartzel each way. The young South African, a winner on tour last year has an excellent record in this tournament. If you excuse his missed cut blip of last season, he has a win and two runners up spots in the preceding three outings and deserves respect here in 2008.

Another South African worthy of note is 12/1 chance Rory Sabbatini. The exuberant Springbok has had a rough ride of it in the past 12 months but showed signs of renewed form in the Nedbank last week when finishing fourth and it might be worth sticking with him here.

Another Rory, of the McIlroy variety also finds himself a 12/1 shot with totesport. The young Ulsterman has gone close twice in the past three months to get his maiden tour victory and although he’s not played the Leopard Creek course before, it won’t be long before he gets off the mark with a win.

The Dunhill Championship begins early on Thursday with live coverage on Skysports.

Champions League betting - Matchday 6 - part 1

December 9th, 2008 | No Comments »

It’s the final round of matches in the Champions League this week and there are plenty of betting opportunities, despite the fact that plenty of teams have already achieved qualification to the last sixteen.

In Group A, Chelsea are in fact not one of those teams who have secured a safe passage into the next round and they must get a victory at home to Romanian outfit CFR Cluj. Totesport go best price 20/1 about Cluj getting a win at Stamford Bridge and it looks as though the home win at 1/7 is the one to get on. The draw is 6/1.

Bordeaux hold the key to who else can progress into the next round. An away win at Roma will see them leapfrog the Italians and possibly relegate them to a UEFA Cup place if Chelsea win in the other fixture. Bordeaux (4/1) lost 3-1 at home against Roma earlier in the campaign and Roma have followed that up with a good home win versus Chelsea so they’re worthy favourites at 8/13. The draw is available at 12/5 with totesport.

Liverpool are the only other English representative playing tonight in Group D. Although already securing qualification with a game in hand, Rafa Benitez will want to top the group to ensure a second leg home tie in the last sixteen against a runner up from one of the other groups. Tonight’s opponents PSV are still playing to reach the UEFA Cup ahead of Marseille and are a good price at 7/5 to do so. The draw is a 23/10 shot and Liverpool are best price 7/4 with totesport.

The other game in Group D sees Marseille hosting Atletico Madrid. Dependant on how seriously Madrid take this a win is very possible and at 9/4 you can fill your boots. Marseille have a similar incentive to PSV and can be backed at evens, with the draw a 9/4 shot.

In Group B, three teams are still in with a shot of qualification. Inter (17/10) currently head the group and a point away against bottom of the table Werder Bremen (13/10) should be enough. You can back the draw at 11/5.

In the other match, probably the tie of the night sees Panathinaikos (8/15) of Greece play Anorthosis (9/2) of Cyprus slugging it out for that remaining last sixteen spot. The Greeks bailed themselves out of a difficult situation by getting an unlikely win in the San Siro versus Inter in the last round of matches so they’ll be looking to take advantage against the season’s surprise package Famagusta. The draw will see Panathinaikos through and you can back it at 5/2 with totesport.

Finally, Group C is a dead duck in terms of qualification to the last sixteen and the UEFA Cup last thirty-two. Barcelona are a 1/2 chance to continue their excellent run of form with a win at home to Shakhtar (5/1) and Sporting Lisbon can get another three points to continue their good campaign with a win away at group C whipping boys Basel (6/4) at 6/4. You can back the draw in either game at 13/5 and 11/5 respectively with totesport if the mood takes you!

Premier League Weekend Preview - 6th Dec 08

December 4th, 2008 | No Comments »

Another week flies by and there’s a full fixture list in the Premier League for you to bet on this weekend with totesport.

The early kick-off on Saturday sees Fulham host Man City at Craven Cottage. The home side are unbeaten in four Premier League matches including two excellent away draws to Liverpool and Aston Villa. They also have an good home record winning their last three matches and the 7/5 about their chances here against a City side (8/5) that have struggled on the road looks a good price. The draw is 11/5.

After last weeks away win at Chelsea, Arsenal look a good thing to get back-to-back wins in the Premier League on Saturday as they host Wigan (8/1) at the Emirates. The 2/7 about the home team with totesport says it all and despite Wigan’s no defeat in the last five they will face an uphill battle here. The draw is 7/2.

A Fernando Torres- less Liverpool make the short trip to Ewood Park to face a rudderless Blackburn Rovers. This is exactly the type of fixture where you’d back against the Reds in the past, but with Blackburn (7/2) in free-fall it’s difficult to look past Liverpool this time. Despite two goalless draws at Anfield in the past fortnight, Liverpool beat Bolton in their last away fixture and are backable at 4/6 here. The draw is 12/5.

Staying in the north-west, Chelsea (8/15)look to bounce back to winning ways after a stuttering fortnight as they face in-form Bolton (9/2). The 5/2 about the draw might be worth taking here with totesport as Chelsea are looking vulnerable at present.

There’s a north-east derby of sorts at the KC Stadium on Saturday as Hull host Middlesbrough. Hull have drawn their last three matches int he Premier League although they’ve not won in six. Boro, who’ve faltered at home this season actually have a decent away record, unbeaten in their last four on the road. I’d certainly oppose Hull at 13/10 and Boro or the draw look decent options at 17/10 and 11/5 respectively with totesport.

The last of Saturday’s 3pm kick offs see Newcastle host Stoke (10/3) at St James’s Park. The ship has been well and truly steadied for the ‘Toon’ by Joe Kinnear but results haven’t set the league alight in the process. They’ve drawn their last three but are unbeaten in four at home, whilst Stoke’s away record is pretty woeful, despite Rory Delap’s thunderous throw-ins. The home team are a 8/11 shot here and that could be the bet of the weekend. The draw is 9/4.

The early evening kick-off on Saturday looks a one-sided affair as Manchester United (1/6) host manager-less Roy Keane at Old Trafford. Former United hero jumped ship on Thursday and won’t be suffering the indignity of a heavy defeat come Saturday. That’s for the training staff and players he leaves behind to endure as the 12/1 shots surely face a comfortable defeat. An unlikely draw is 9/2 with totesport.

Sunday sees two Premier League fixtures in the shape of West Brom (6/4) versus Pompey and Everton (6/4) versus Villa. Both Portsmouth and Aston Villa have UEFA Cup matches to contend with at time of writing, the former an away trip to Germany. Villa shouldn’t break too much sweat at Home to MSK Zilina and can be backed at 6/4 to win at a resurgent Everton. Pompey play bottom of the table West Brom and the 6/4 about their chances, despite a UEFA Cup hangover looks pretty tasty.

On Monday, West Ham face Spurs at the Boleyn Ground. West Ham haven’t won at home in four but have had encouraging signs on the road with a win versus Boro and a draw away at Liverpool on their last two outings. The 6/4 about their chances against an indifferent Spurs (also a 6/4 shot) looks a decent price. Be warned though, West Ham have a poor record against Spurs and with Harry Redknapp back on the scene nothing would surprise me! The draw is 11/5 with totesport.

Prices correct at the time of writing but look out for totesport’s enhanced Premier League coupon available from Friday.

Tingle Creek Betting Preview

December 4th, 2008 | No Comments »

The best two mile chasers in the business will do battle on Saturday at Sandown in the Tingle Creek.

Favourite to take the spoils is current champion chaser and highest rated horse in training, Master Minded. The Clive Smith owned and Paul Nicholls trained 5yo hacked up in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the festival last March beating reigning champ Voy Por Ustedes 19 lengths.

Only stable-mate Twist magic ran in that race and was the winner of the Tingle Creek in 2007. After a disappointing return to the track in the William Haldon Cup at Exeter last month he couldn’t be backed with any confidence here and is a 12/1 shot with totesport in the non runner no bet market.

Tidal Bay looks the pick amongst the opposition to Master Minded at 11/4 NRNB. The Howard Johnson trained 2008 Arkle winner followed up with an impressive win at Aintree in April and a very strong display at Carlisle on its only outing this season, beating the field by 9 lengths at the beginning of November.

Master Minded will take the beating though and this sets up a fascinating race and what will be a competitive betting heat with the favourite an 8/13 shot with totesport NRNB.

Don’t forget, the scoop6 bonus fund has still to be won. That means, if you can pick the winners of all six races in the totescoop6 races this Saturday, you could be playing for the bonus fun the following week for a massive £1.5m million!

UEFA Cup Betting Preview

December 4th, 2008 | No Comments »

There are a couple of games in the UEFA Cup tonight which, without proper attention could have gone unnoticed! Villa host Slovakian team MSK Zilina and Pompey travel to Germany to face Wolfsburg.

Aston Villa look a shoe-in fro a home win which is reflected in the betting at 2/7 with totesport. The traders at totesport must be pretty confident of a home win going best price the draw and the away team but that’s still not likely to attract backers as top play bottom in Group F.

The Portsmouth match versus Wolfsburg looks a much more competitive betting heat with the away team a 12/5 shot to bounce back from their last gasp draw with Ac Milan.

Pompey got the reaction they needed at the weekend as they secured three points versus Blackburn at Fratton Park and with Jermain Defoe back leading the line tonight they will offer some attacking threat.

Wolfsburg (10/11) are currently second in Group E and almost assured of a place in the next round. A win or draw tonight will most certainly guarantee their names are in the last 32. The draw is 9/4 with totesport.
