Pretty Fontana golf club hosts this week’s Austrian Open with Australia’s Richard Green, Irishman Darren Clarke and Denmark’s Soren Hansen among the market leaders at totesport.
Green, winner here in 2007, almost made a right pig’s ear of things when he failed to get down in two putts from 12 feet when just off the back of the 72nd green.
Luckily for him he faced the decidedly limited Jean Francois Remesy in the eventual play-off and a par at the first extra hole was good enough for victory.
That was then and this is now and the Aussie left-hander, who has a reputation for snatching defeat from the jaws of victory, is probably best left alone this week.
Clarke meanwhile has shown some highly positive signs that another win in 2008 could be on the cards. Dazzler carded a final round 66 to finish 4th at Celtic Manor last week and looks to be right on his game.
The burly Ulsterman missed the cut here in 2007 but was in a very poor run of form at the time and can be excused that effort. He now has his sights firmly set on a bold run for Nick Faldo’s Ryder Cup side and that alone will guarantee punters a highly focused Clarke this week.
Jeev Milka Singh, who shapes the ball from left to right, is a player we also like the look of. Although he has no course experience his faded ball flight will be suited to this course, particularly the decisive 18th.
The 2007 Valderrama Volvo Masters winner is one of the class acts in this field and should prosper. Back the Indian to do well in the outskirts of Vienna.
