Bet on The Derby with totesport
The Epsom Derby, run in early June at Epsom Downs in Surrey, is one of the world’s most famous races and at totesport we have a wide selection of Derby markets.
The mile-and-a-half race sees the cream of three-year-old colts do battle for arguably the most sought after prizes in the world of flat racing.
Many of the greatest horses on history have risen to the challenge of the unique Derby course, a track that see the horses climb uphill before making a steep, sweeping descent to Tattenham Corner and then finishing down the astonishing home straight that has a marked camber from the outside rail to the inner rail.
Punters should look for an athletic and well balanced horse who can pass the test and show the courage to win or be placed.
The two-year-old trial races such as the Dewhurst Stakes and the Racing Post Trophy help establish the principal contender for the following year’s Derby and form the mainstay of Toesport’s ante-post list for the race.
Many horses are entered for the race as yearlings and it is not beyond the bounds of possibility that a ‘dark horse’ may appear as a three-year-old. totesport offer ante-post odds for all horses entered in the Derby, some at massive three-figure prices.
The race is reported to date back as far as 1661, but the first running of the event as we know it today took place in 1779. The great jockey Steve Donoghue won the race six times in the period between 1915-25, his record only surpassed by the legendary Lester Piggott who made the race his own with an extraordinary nine wins, starting with Never Say Die in 1954 and finishing with Teenoso in 1983.
The list of great horses, their trainers and jockeys to have won at Epsom comprises a ‘Who’s Who’ of the history of horse racing. Diomed (1780), Voltigeur (1850), Ormonde (1886) ridden by the ill-fated Fred Archer who won the race five times between between 1877-86. In 1913 suffragette Emily Davison was killed after throwing herself in front of King George V’s horse Anmer, the race eventually being won by Aboyeur.
In 1933 the superb Hyperion was one of a number of winners in the race for the Earl’s of Derby (after whom the race is named). Some of the finest horses of the modern era to have galloped to glory include Sea Bird (1965), Sir Ivor (1968), Nijinsky (1970), Mill Reef (1971), the infamous Shergar (1981), Lammtarra (1995).
In the last decade Irish jockeys Johnny Murtagh and Keiren Fallon have both won the race on three occassions, whilst trainers Sir Michael Stoute and Aidan O’Brien have both landed the race twice during the same period and their runners are worthy of consideration.
Besides the ante-post betting opportunities, we at totesport offer a tremendous array of bets on the actual day of the race, both at traditional odds (win, each-way, forecasts etc) and via the Tote. Bets with totesport can be placed at one of their high street office, via telebetting or on the internet at totesport.com
