The 1970’s were very much the ‘Golden Era’ of the race as Nijinsky romped to an imperious victory in the first year of the decade, one of seven wins in the race for the mighty Lester Piggott. Mill Reef (1971), Brigadier Gerard (1972) and Dahlia (1973 & ‘74), were followed by the 1975 renewal that has often been described as ‘the race of the century’, when the three-year-old Derby winner Grundy got the better of the year older Bustino in a race that raised the roof off the Ascot grandstand.
The Minstrel (1977), Troy (1979), Dancing Brave (1986) , Generous (1991), Swain (1997 & ‘98), Galileo (2001), and most recently Dylan Thomas (2007), have all etched their names in the history books.
Since 1995 Godolphin’s private trainer Saeed bin Suroor has been the man to follow in the race, sending out the winner on no less than five occasions. Ireland’s John Oxx (twice) and Aidan O’Brien (twice) also have a sound record in this historic event.
Frankie Dettori is the winning-most jockey of his generation in the ‘King George’ having struck four times, starting with the unbeaten Lammtarra in 1995, whilst Michael Kinane (3 wins) also has a fine record in this race.
