Danny hopes to take Care of Scotland

March 12th, 2010 Posted in rugby union

Danny CareScrum-half Danny Care claims England are ready to ‘click’ into gear and hopes it happens in the Six Nations clash against Scotland at Murrayfield (Scotland 6/4, England 2/5, draw 18/1 80 Minute Betting) on Saturday.

Martin Johnson’s men will go up against the struggling Scots (8/13 Wooden Spoon) for the Calcutta Cup in Edinburgh aiming to bounce back from the Twickenham defeat to Ireland last time out and the unconvincing win in Italy before that.

And Harelquins star Care is looking for England (9/2 Six Nations Outright W/O France) to finally show what they can do against a Scotland side looking for its first points of the campaign.

He said: “We’re working hard in training on that last finishing touch.

“And when it does click I think it will be something really special. Hopefully we can do that this weekend.”

England have lost their last two games in Scotland but regained the Calcutta Cup on home soil last year.

Kidney keeps faith with XV

March 10th, 2010 Posted in rugby union

Jonathan SextonIreland coach Declan Kidney will stick with the same Ireland side (10/1 to win the tournament) that beat England (20/1) last time out as they prepare to host Wales on Saturday in the Six Nations.

Geordan Murphy retains his position at full-back despite Rob Kearney’s return to full fitness after he missed the game at Twickenham while Jonathan Sexton stays at fly-half with Ronan O’Gara on the bench again.

Kearney’s inclusion in the squad means there is no place for Ulster’s Andrew Trimble as he drops out of the 22.

Kidney believes despite Lions star Kearny returning to full fitness he felt Murphy had done enough in his first international start for a year to warrant another game against Wales (11/10 to score over 12.5 tries in the tournament specials).

“I thought Geordan went well against England to warrant a second go,” said Kidney.

“Rob has worked hard to get back but we’ve decided to go with Geordan.”

The other big team news is that skipper Brian O’Driscoll will earn his 100th cap for Ireland (4/11 to win the Triple Crown) just one game after John Hayes had become the first Irishman to reach the landmark.

While Ireland have few injury concerns their opponents haven’t been so lucky with captain Ryan Jones set to miss out with a calf injury.

Jones’ absence mean Martyn Williams will skipper the Wales side for the trip to Croke Park while Gareth Delve will take the number eight shirt for his first international cap since the summer tour to South Africa in 2008.

The good news for Wales is that Matthew Rees is fit enough to start so he replaces Huw Bennett from the 26-20 defeat to France while Luke Charteris comes in at lock in place of Deiniol Jones.

Shaw out of Scotland clash

March 9th, 2010 Posted in Uncategorized, rugby union

Simon ShawLock Simon Shaw has been ruled out of England’s Calcutta Cup match with Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday with a shoulder injury as Martin Johnson’s men look to keep their Six Nations hopes alive (England 20/1 Six Nations Outright).

The 36-year-old Wasps star suffered the injury during the 20-16 Six Nations defeat by Ireland at Twickenham on 27 February and he was replaced in that game by Leicester lock Louis Deacon, who is favourite to start against the struggling Scots (Scotland 4/6 Wooden Spoon) .

Tom Palmer has been called into the squad as an injury replacement for Shaw, while there is also a call-up for Gloucester centre Mike Tindall.

Meanwhile England are still awaiting news on the fitness of full-back Delon Armitage, who has a rib cartilage injury.

“Delon’s rib injury is difficult to call when he will be fit,” said Johnson.

Pulis confident of reaching Wembley

March 7th, 2010 Posted in rugby union

Tony PulisStoke manager Tony Pulis is confident his side can reach the FA Cup semi-finals by defying the odds and beating Chelsea (1/4 to beat Stoke in the 90 minute betting) at Stamford Bridge on Sunday.

The Potters head west London as the 9/1 underdogs to overcome the Blues in the cup despite having already beaten Manchester City and Arsenal on their way to the quarter-finals.

Pulis’ side (18/1 to win the FA Cup) have already upset the odds this season by dumping City out of the cup, securing a draw at Eastlands before winning 3-1 in extra time in the replay.

A similar result on Sunday would more than likely please the Stoke supporters as they look to inflict a second straight home defeat on Chelsea after their defeat to Man City last Saturday.

Pulis is already looking forward to another high-profile scalp as he believes the title of underdogs will suit his team.

“We go there as rank underdogs and no-one will give us a chance. It is going to be a tough game and we’ve played some tough games over the last couple of weeks,” said Pulis.

“But we’ll go down there, try to enjoy it and do the best we can because it is 38 years since this club was in an FA Cup quarter-final.

Cockerill confident over Flood fitness

March 7th, 2010 Posted in rugby union

Toby FloodLeicester Tiger head coach Richard Cockerill believes Toby Flood should be fit for England’s vital Six Nations clash against Scotland (4/6 to receive the Wooden Spoon) next weekend.

England coach Martin Johnson already has injury concerns over Delon Armitage and Simon Shaw heading into the Calcutta Cup match at Murrayfield and the last thing he will want is another player facing a race against time to be fit for the crunch game.

Stand-off Flood left the field just after half-time in the Tigers 35-19 Guinness Premiership victory over London Irish having suffered a blow to head in the early exchanges of the game.

Cockerill has now moved to reassure all England (20/1 to win the Six Nations) supporters that Flood will be fit for the clash against the Scots and claims taking him off was just a precautionary measure.

“He was a little dazed but nothing serious. He had it early in the game and we looked at him at half-time, he was a bit hazy in his vision so we decided to bring him off early in the second half,” Cockerill said.

“He will be fine (for Murrayfield). It was a physical game in lots of ways, it’s a precaution and we are looking after him.”

Saturday’s victory for Leicester saw them extend their lead at the top of the Premiership with Northampton hopeful of making up some ground on Sunday by beating out-of-form Sale (11/8 to win in the 80 minute betting).

Scotland still confident - Parks

March 6th, 2010 Posted in rugby union

Dan ParksFly-half Dan Parks is adamant that Scotland are still confident of not finishing the Six Nations campaign bottom of the pile (Scotland 4/6 Wooden Spoon) following recent narrow defeats against Wales and Italy.

The Scots lost their opening match to favourites France (1/5 to win Grand Slam) before suffering a late collapse to lose 31-24 in Wales and then losing a lead before going down 16-12 in Italy.

However Parks claims the squad have spoken with coach Andy Robinson and are now in good spirits ahead of next weekend’s clash with England at Murrayfield.

“We had a really thorough talking over with Andy,” Parks told BBC Scotland.

“I have to say confidence is quite good at the moment. We just need to close off games.”

He added: “He was very honest and it was appreciated by all the boys, which was really good.

“We sat in it and took it. It was tough, but it was really good for the team.

“We had ourselves in a position to win the game against Italy and against Wales we should have won the game full stop.

“Confidence is still there. It is just a case of putting in an 80-minute performance instead of a 75-minute performance.”

Ospreys suffer injury setback

March 3rd, 2010 Posted in rugby union

Tom SmithOspreys have been dealt a big blow with the news that back rower Tom Smith will miss the next eights weeks and is a doubt for their Heineken Cup clash with Biarritz.

The 24-year-old picked up hip and knee injuries in the Welsh region’s 19-17 victory over Connacht (18/1 to win the European Challenge Cup) on February 21.

The former Wales (40/1 to receive the wooden spoon) under-21 captain was forced off early on in the game at the Liberty Stadium and scans on Tuesday showed the full extent of the injuries.

Ospreys (4/1 to win the Magners League grand final), who face Edinburgh (20/1) on Sunday, will now be concerned that Smith will miss their upcoming Heineken Cup quarter-final match with Biarritz on April 10.

“He is improving as well as we could hope for at the moment, but we are looking at a recovery period of around six to eight weeks from the day of the game, which means that we are looking at a mid-April return to playing.”

The good news for the Ospreys ahead of their game with Edinburgh is that Mike Phillips along with Andrew Bishop, Dan Biggar, Tom Prydie, Kristian Phillips and Ian Gough have all been released by Wales to play at Hampden Park this weekend.

Wales lose duo for Six Nations

March 2nd, 2010 Posted in rugby union

Wales lock Deiniol JonesWales will be without the forward duo of hooker Gareth Williams and lock Deiniol Jones for the remainder of the Six Nations because of injury.

Williams picked up a knee injury in the 31-24 victory over Scotland while Jones came off with a rib injury in the 26-20 defeat to France (1/33 to win the Six Nations outright) on Friday night.

The injuries leaves coach Warren Gatland with a selection headache ahead of the game against Ireland (4/11 to win the triple crown) in two weeks time with Gethin Jenkins, Dwayne Peel, Mike Phillips, Alun Wyn Jones and Andy Powell all either doubtful or out of the game at Croke Park.

Gatland will also be hopeful that the 14 of the players he has released from his 32-man squad to play for their clubs this weekend don’t pick up any problems, especially Matthew Rees as he prepares to play for the Scarlets (150/1 to be Magners League grand final winners) against Ulster (25/1) at the Parc y Scarlets on Friday night.

The Wales coach will hope the weekends fixtures serve as a chance for some of his squad to get some game time under their belts with the likes of scrum-half Mike Phillips having not played much rugby in the last few months.

Phillips will more than likely be involved for the Ospreys in their clash against Edinburgh on Sunday, along with compatriots Andrew Bishop, Dan Biggar, Tom Prydie, Kristian Phillips and Ian Gough as they look to play their way into contention.

Leeds move Back to tears after Wasps win

March 1st, 2010 Posted in rugby union

Leeds Carnegie head coach Neil Back has paid tribute to the side’s fans as the Headingley outfit look to defy the odds and remain in the Guinness Premiership for next season (8/11 To Finish Bottom).

Leeds have given their survival chances a shot in the arm with back-to-back wins against Sale Sharks (11/2 To Finish Bottom) and London Wasps ahead of the visit of Saracens this weekend.

The Men in Black edged the league meeting between the sides at Vicarage Road back in October, but Carnegie will be confident ahead of Sunday’s return.

And England World Cup 2003 winner Back believes his side can pull off another ‘Great Escape’ act as they bid to end their yo-yo status.

He told the BBC: “If we continue to play like that we are going to challenge and put pressure on anyone and we should get the results we need to achieve our objectives this year.

“This victory was not just about the 23 involved today, it’s about the whole squad and I’m very proud of the whole squad.

“The guys outside the 23 are the ones that really contribute to our success, and continue to, and they need to for the rest of the season. They work hard in training and all keep the standards very high at the club.

“I have to fight back the tears. I am an emotional guy and I don’t let many people see that. It was an extremely proud moment for the whole management team and the whole squad today.

“The fans have always been fantastic. They haven’t been great in number, but they’ve always been very passionate, very loyal to us and gave us tremendous support and that was the case again today.”

Bath coach confident ahead of Saracens battle

February 28th, 2010 Posted in rugby union

Brad Davis reckons his Bath (11/8 to win – Guinness Premiership coupon) side could be meeting Saracens at the right time in the Guinness Premiership.

The Bath coach told BBC Radio Bristol that he has seen his side looking confident in recent weeks and they face Saracens (4/7 to win, 18/1 draw – Guinness Premiership coupon) at Vicarage Road today looking to cause an upset.

Bath sit seventh in the Guinness Premiership table while their hosts this afternoon are third and close to battling for the title.

Davis has to cope for the game without Butch James, their dominant stand-off, and he has been replaced by Ryan Davis.

Better news for Bath fans is the return of Olly Barkley in midfield as he makes his first appearance since being out of action with a broken leg.

Davis said: “For the last few weeks, everyone’s come in with a bit of a spring in their step, looking forward to training, looking forward to matches and looking forward to continuing this run.

“Things are going well for us at the moment, we should continue to keep building.”

Elsewhere in the Guinness Premiership on Sunday afternoon, Leeds Carnegie take on Wasps (Leeds 7/4, draw 18/1, Wasps 6/9 – match coupon) while London Irish play host to Harlequins at the Madejski Stadium (Irish 2/7, draw 20/1, Harlequins 5/2 – match coupon).
