Easter rejects England captaincy talk for Six Nations

Touted replacement Nick Easter has thrown his weight Steve Borthwick for the England captaincy for the Six Nations (England 5/1 Outright Winners).

The Saracens skipper has been under scrutiny following the poor run of form under team manager Martin Johnson, who will wait until nearer the start of the tournament before naming his on-field leader.

Borthwick has captained England in all 14 matches of Johnson’s reign but it appears he will have to win his place in the XV first in order to continue in the role.

And with Simon Shaw, Louis Deacon and Courtney Lawes pushing hard for a start, Johnson has a decision to make for the opener against Wales (7/2 Outright) at Twickenham on February 6.

However, Easter, who has been mentioned as a possible captain himself, has backed Borthwick’s claim.

The Harlequins No.8 told PA Sport: “Steve is a tremendous captain. He brings so much intensity and professionalism to every training session.

“When he says something he isn’t just saying it for the sake of it.”

Easter added: “He has been captaining Sarries well this season. They’ve been there or thereabouts at the top of the league and I think he’s a natural leader.”
