“Do-Or-Die” for Ronaldo and Real

March 10th, 2010 | No Comments »

Cristiano Ronaldo“Do-or-die” is how midfielder Cristiano Ronaldo has described Wednesday’s Champions League clash with Lyon as his Real Madrid side attempt to overturn a 1-0 deficit from the first leg (Real Madrid 3/10, draw 4/1, Lyon 9/1 match odds).

Ronaldo believes that home advantage will be telling and that the flair of ‘Los Galacticos’ will overcome the physical power of the French outfit.

He said: “We are familiar with Lyon. They are a strong team physically speaking, but it’s our turn to play at home. I am convinced that this team will respond and that we will make it through to the next round.”

Madrid are 5/1 about a 2-0 win and Ronaldo is 3/1 joint favourite to be First Goalscorer and 2/3 in the Anytime Goalscorer market.

Meanwhile, defender Sergio Ramos is also confident ahead of the clash. Madrid arrive in off the back of seven straight La Liga wins, including a thrilling 3-2 success against Sevilla at the weekend. Madrid clearly have the momentum as Lyon are going into the game off  the back of a goalless draw against lowly Boulogne. Ramos is 14/1 to be First Goalscorer and 4/1 in the Anytime Goalscorer market.

The defender is also convinced that Lyon will “fall back to defend” and that this will suit Madrid. He has confidently predicted a 3-0 success for the Spanish outfit, which is available at 7/1.

However, Real have disappointed in the Champions League in recent seasons, failing to reach the quarter-finals of the tournament in each of the past five seasons. A repeat of the first leg – a 1-0 Lyon success – is on offer at 12/1.

Leonardo drops Beckham teaser

March 10th, 2010 | No Comments »

David BeckhamAC Milan boss Leonardo is remaining tight-lipped about whether David Beckham will start against his old club Manchester United in the Champions League on Wednesday.

The Italians are trailing 3-2 from the first leg and need to score at least twice to secure progression. They are 25/1 with totesport.com to make history by winning 2-0 at Old Trafford as United have never been knocked out of European competition after winning an away first leg.

Beckham will add another attacking dimension to the Milan side and the 34-year-old is expected to make an appearance against the club he left in 2003 at some point. This makes the 11/1 Last Goalscorer about Beckham tempting, particularly if Milan are forced to go all guns blazing to secure the goals they need.

If Milan are to succeed, they will need to keep Wayne Rooney quiet. He will return to the United side after missing the weekend’s Premier League trip to Wolves with a minor knee injury. Despite the absence, the England striker will be fresh and determined to prevail against his international team-mate. Rooney is the 7/2 favourite to be first scorer.

Ronaldinho has expressed his concern over Rooney, confidently suggesting “if we can stop him our own options soar”.

The Milan star is predicting “a very attacking game with many goals” and Totesport are offering 3/1 for 3 goals and 9/2 for 4 goals this evening.

Rooney CL boost for United

March 9th, 2010 | No Comments »

Wayne RooneyWayne Rooney looks set to feature for Manchester United in their huge Champions League showdown on Wednesday against AC Milan after coming through a training session on Tuesday (United 8/13, Milan 9/2 the draw 11/4 match odds).

The in-form striker was rated as doubtful for the last-16 second-leg clash and missed United’s 1-0 win at Wolves on Saturday due to his knee injury.

However, he did train with the rest of the United squad at Carrington ahead of the much-anticipated Old Trafford game and looks like being fit to start against Leonardo’s side (United 11/2 Champions League outright winners).

Ryan Giggs, however, is not expected to play in the game, which United hold a slender 3-2 advantage from the first leg, despite training after having a plate removed from the arm he broke at Aston Villa recently.

Michael Carrick is suspended for the second leg following his late dismissal in the San Siro, so Darren Fletcher is in line to return to the starting line-up as boss Sir Alex Ferguson ponders his options.

Fabregas absence blow for Arsenal

March 9th, 2010 | No Comments »

Cesc FabregasArsene Wenger has confirmed Cesc Fabregas will not play when Arsenal take on Porto in the Champions League (Arsenal 4/7, Porto 4/1, draw 13/5 90 Minutes) on Tuesday evening.

The Gunners boss had hoped the Spanish star would be able to feature in the game as his side aim to overturn a 2-1 first leg deficit at the Emirates Stadium.

However Wenger revealed that the recurrence of the hamstring injury which Fabregas picked up against Burnley on Saturday will keep him out against the Portuguese side as he does not want to risk making the problem worse for the Premier League (Arsenal 13/5 Premier League Outright) push.

“Cesc has a hamstring problem and we could not even take a gamble with him,” said Wenger. “I was hoping he would recover after the Burnley game because we were cautious with him.

“We don’t know how long he will be out. He is having a scan today and we are convinced it will only be a small time, and he has a small chance of getting back for next weekend against Hull, but to play him again would mean significant damage.”

Meanwhile Alex Song is available after serving a two-match ban while midfield duo Andrey Arshavin and Abou Diaby, who came off the bench at the weekend, could start.

William Gallas is again expected to miss out with a calf injury.

Mourinho plays down Chelsea knowledge

February 24th, 2010 | No Comments »

Jose MourinhoInter Milan boss Jose Mourinho has refuted claims his knowledge of Chelsea gives him the upper hand in the huge Champions League meeting between the sides on Wednesday (Inter 7/4, Chelsea 13/8, the draw 21/10 in totesport’s match coupon).

Mourinho was the Chelsea manager between 2004 and 2007 and guided them to successive Premier League titles during his time at Stamford Bridge, but the Portuguese coach is now plotting against them in the last 16 Euro showdown.

The Inter boss will be well aware of Chelsea’s strengths and weaknesses (Didier Drgoba 5/1 to score first) but he denies his links with the Blues gives him an advantage over Carlo Ancelotti in the tie.

“I know Chelsea well but that doesn’t mean it’s any easier,” he said. “Sometimes it’s more difficult when you know so much about the team.

“If you don’t decide what’s the right information to give new players about old players, you can get into trouble.”

Chelsea will welcome back Frank Lampard, who has recovered from a virus, for the San Siro clash while defenders Alex and Juliano Belletti are also fit (Chelsea 7/2 half-time/full-time).

However, Ashley Cole, Yury Zhirkov, Jose Bosingwa, Michael Essien and Deco are all on the injured list.

Inter expect goalkeeper Julio Cesar to play despite being involved in a minor car crash, but Cristian Chivu and Davide Santon are both on the sidelines for the Serie A leaders.

Jose suggests Chelsea could crack

February 22nd, 2010 | No Comments »

Jose MourinhoJose Mourinho will tell his Internazionale players they have to believe his old club Chelsea are not untouchable ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League last-16 showdown (Inter 13/8 draw 2/1 Chelsea 6/4 Champions League match betting).

Chelsea will arrive at the San Siro four point clear of champions Manchester United in the race for the Premier League table, but Stamford Bridge favourite Mourinho is convinced the west Londoners are not the war machine they were when he guided them to consecutive titles in 2005 and 2006.

The Blues have drawn four and lost four of their 27 Premier League matches under new manager Carlo Ancelotti and Mourinho feels they can be got at (Chelsea 4/9 Inter 13/8 - To Qualify).

The Portuguese coach, who won the Champions League with Porto in 2004, said: “The Premier League is never easy - every game normally is difficult.

“But when a team is strong, strong, strong, strong, strong, it doesn’t lose so many matches, so many points.”

Iniesta excited by Euro vision

February 22nd, 2010 | No Comments »

Andres IniestaAndres Iniesta has warned holders Barcelona have no intention of relinquishing their Champions League crown (Barcelona 3/1 Champions League - Outright).

Barca bounced back from their first defeat in La Liga by beating Racing Santander 4-0 on Saturday without a host of senior first-team players, although Xavi and Dani Alves are expected to return on Tuesday against Stuttgart (Stuttgart 7/2 draw 12/5 Barcelona 4/6 Champions League - match betting) in the last 16 of Europe’s premier club competition.

Iniesta, who was making his 300th appearance for the Catalan giants, said Barca were over their blip and ready to move into top gear for the defence of their European title.

“When you lose what you want is to play again quickly and win, and this gives us confidence for Tuesday’s game,” said the Spain international.

He added: “The Champions League is a competition we like a lot and on Tuesday we have to get a good result.”

Zlatan Ibrahimovic, who missed Saturday night’s 4-0 win over Racing because of an ankle problem, has also been included in the trip to Germany along with youngsters Jonathan dos Santos and Marc Bartra, but Seydou Keita and Eric Abidal are out.

Ferguson - Everton deserved shock United win

February 20th, 2010 | No Comments »

Manchester United boss Sir Alex Ferguson admitted Everton were the better side in the second half after the Red Devils slumped to a 3-1 defeat at Goodison Park on Saturday.

The Old Trafford outfit pulled off an impressive 3-2 win at AC Milan in the Champions League on Tuesday night (United 11/2 Outright) but their Premier League title hopes have taken a blow after coming unstuck at the Toffees.

Ferguson shuffled his pack against David Moyes’ side and was rewarded when Dimitar Berbatov, on his return to the side, opened the scoring on 16 minutes.

But the Blues hit back through Diniyar Bilyaletdinov (19), Dan Gosling (76) and Jack Rodwell in the last minute to condemn United to their fifth away defeat in the league of the campaign.

Afterwards Fergie told Sky Sports: “We were well beaten, it’s as simple as that.

“Second half we were outplayed. Maybe we left something in Milan, we looked tired, but when you are going for the championship you expect Manchester United  to respond to the importance of the game.

“We started the game well enough but the equaliser galvanised them and gave them an incentive. The second half they were better.”

Nothing is finished, warns Leonardo

February 17th, 2010 | No Comments »

Wayne RooneyLeonardo has warned “nothing is finished” and said his AC Milan players are determined to end the Champions League dream for Manchester United (Man United 1/10 AC Milan 11/2 - To Qualify).

A see-saw last-16 first-leg clash at the San Siro ended in a 3-2 victory for 2008 winners United but it could have been so much different had the Serie A title-chasers converted numerous chances.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s side were in a position of control at 3-1 - helped by two headed goals from in-form Wayne Rooney (14/1 Champions League Top Goalscorer) - but a late goal from substitute Clarence Seedorf has given the seven-time winners hope of an upset at Old Trafford.

Leonardo felt Milan were good value for a win on home soil and is convinced the tie is still alive.

“We did not deserve to lose this match,” said Leonardo.

“But nothing is finished. We have to win 2-0 in England, which is certainly not beyond us.

“When we got into our stride, we dominated United.

“Indeed the first half could have ended 3-0 in our favour.”

Ronaldo won’t throw towel in

February 17th, 2010 | No Comments »

Cristiano RonaldoCristiano Ronaldo has warned long-suffering Real Madrid fans they may have to face more agony before dreaming of a return to Champions League glory days (Real Madrid 8/13 Lyon 6/5 - To Qualify).

Spain’s big-spending capital club slumped to a 1-0 defeat against Lyon on Tuesday - Madrid’s third successive loss at the Stade Gerland – and now face the unenviable task of avoiding a last-16 exit for the sixth successive year when they host the French side at the Estadio Santiago Bernabeu.

Jean Makoun struck a brilliant 25-yard drive to settle the first-leg but is could have been a lot worse for the La Liga title-chasers.

Portugal superstar Ronaldo said Real still believe they can turn the tie on its head and make the quarter-finals of Europe’s premier club competition, which they last won in 2002 (6/1 Real Madrid - Champions League Outright).

“In football anything is possible. We’ve lost here but we have a game at home in which we can repeat what they did here,” said Ronaldo, who won the Champions League with Manchester United in 2008.

“I’m calm. In this competition you have to suffer. I’m sure that we will give a good answer in the return game and that we will win.

“The Bernabeu will help us. We will have to give to give it everything from the first minute until the last. The tie is not lost.”
