Birdies make prizes in Kent

July 2nd, 2008 | No Comments »

Big-hitting Swede Johan Edfors 66/1 looks a great punt at this week´s European Open that features four shortish par 5s by today’s standards.

Edfors has a great recent record on British courses (wins at the Belfry and Loch Lomond in 2006) and although we have no previous course form to go on here there are signs that the 7,257 yard, par 72 Jack Nicklaus-designed Heritage track could be right up his street.

With three of the par 5’s under 550 yards and the other at 563 Edfors will fancy his chances of reaching all in two blows, which of course spells birdies and possibly better.

2008 Players’ Champion Sergio Garcia and 2007 Open king Padraig Harrington are playing together on UK soil for the first time since their memorable Open Championship duel last year.

Also in the field is 2007 European Tour Order of Merit winner Justin Rose who is certain to receive plenty of punting support at the Kent course that can often be exposed to high winds.

With plenty of birdies and low scoring in prospect ace putter Niclas Fasth 40/1 comes into the punting plan.

Fasth has experienced a low key 2008 thus far but seems to thrive on lay outs that reward attacking golf. He’s a great wind player and his aggressive ball-striking is likely to give him more than his fair share of birdie efforts.

Finally, with Spanish sport on such a high, have a poke at the exciting Alejandro Canizares 125/1. The young Spaniard (son of Ryder Cupper Jose Maria) almost claimed his maiden win in last year’s Madrid Open and is a certain future winner on tour. In an event where the winner will need to shoot at every flag stick Canizares´s gung-ho golf is just the ticket.

Casey eyes Memorial joy

May 29th, 2008 | No Comments »

The great Jack Nicklaus hosts this week’s PGA Tour event - the top class Memorial Tournament - where we fancy big hitting Englishman Paul Casey to make some waves.

Casey’s CV boasts two solid efforts at the Ohio layout that traditionally features wide fairways and quick greens. The man with the Popeye forearms gets a 66/1 quote from totesport and that’s well worth an interest. Casey finished 18th here in 2006 and 31st last year but the most solid reason for following him here is Memorial’s similarities to Augusta.

With wide landing areas and quicksilver greens the Nicklaus-designed track generally suits players who do well on the Augusta masterpiece. Those who watched this year’s Masters will concur that Casey looked like a very plausible winner over the first three days.

One of the most important clubs in the bag this week is the driver and with that in mind languid Aussie Geoff Ogilvy gets our second selection. Not many drive it longer and straighter than the 2006 US Open champ. He has course pedigree having finished ninth here last year and proved he is bang in form with a seventh placed finish at Colonial last week. Grab some of that 16/1.

The official PGA Tour’s site is a great resource for statistics and the category labelled “total driving” that combines driving distance with driving accuracy is one to keep an eye on this week.

Boo Weekley currently sits in 10th spot on that list and there is no doubting this guy’s talent when he gets in the mix. Weekley, who says he will only play golf until he has earned enough money to buy a farm, has already won this year at Harbour Town. It must be a very big farm he refers to because he has bagged over $4 million in prize money in less than two seasons.

He is getting better all the time and we confidently expect him to improve on last year’s effort when he finished 29th. Get involved with some of totesport’s 28/1.

Cink starts as Sugarloaf favourite

May 14th, 2008 | No Comments »

With a weekly offering of over half a dozen markets, on no less than seven golf events there can be little doubt that totesport offer one of the most comprehensive services in the betting industry.

A large percentage of this week’s punting action is likely to take place at the AT&T Classic in Georgia where local resident Stewart Cink starts as 10/1 favourite.

The tall Alabama man knows the Sugarloaf track like the back of his hand having first played the course when attending Georgia Tech and has finished in the top ten here an astonishing six times.

Despite this form, Cink has never quite finished the job, so we’ll overlook his odds and dig out two juicier priced players that can give us a run through to the climax on Sunday evening.

66/1 shot Matt Kuchar is another Georgia Tech graduate and he really caught the eye with a third place finish last year. Billed as a star in the making following a glittering college career, Kuchar hasn’t quite yet trained on but lets not forget he has already won on the US Tour winning the 2002 Honda Classic.

The 29-year-old has experienced a steady 2008, but a return to a course that clearly holds fond college memories might just inspire him to greater things.

Wind is usually a big factor at Sugarloaf and with that in mind we reckon Brett Quigley at 80/1 is worth investment. Thanks to him being one of the best ball strikers in the game, the nephew of senior tour veteran Dana Quigley generally comes to the fore when the trousers start flapping.

With his sixth place finish at Sawgrass last week, Quigley tees off as one of the form horses in the field and just needs a little more luck on the greens to enter the winners circle.

Crucially, like Kuchar, Quigley has an early tee time on Thursday. The winds at Sugarloaf tend to get up in the afternoon and our two men are likely to get the best of the conditions in the morning.

2008 Players Championship: Spectacular Sawgrass to serve up more drama

May 8th, 2008 | No Comments »

Golf´s unofficial “fifth Major” gets underway this week as the world´s finest tee it up in the Players´ Championship in Florida.

With Tiger Woods still recovering from the battle of wounded knee totesport list Phil Mickelson and Adam Scott at the top of the betting.

Both have great course form with Mickelson having won this event last year and Scott claiming the spoils in 2004.

Sawgrass is a course that places huge demands on all aspects of the players´ games. Unsurprisingly, the majority of past winners have all been Major champions.

If you´re thinking of placing a few bets this week that´s something to keep at the forefront of your mind.

Former US Open champion Jim Furyk gets our first selection. The local resident finished third here two years ago, fourth in 2003 and clearly knows his way round the tricky Pete Dye designed layout.

He showed some solid form at the recent Wachovia Championship in finishing seventh and has the mental toughness to cope with the serious examinations this course sets on almost every hole.

There is no more famous hole in golf than the notorious 17th. With an island green this par 3 has seen many a promising round finish in a watery grave.

The huge crowds that gather around the hole add to the tension and if the wind blows expect to see plenty of double bogeys and worse.

In short this isn´t a tournament for the faint-hearted. So our final tip is another player who wants for nothing when it comes to guts and determination.

2007 Open champion Padraig Harrington clearly has the game to handle Sawgrass.

The Dubliner has finished runner-up in 2003 and 2004 and already has three top 10s to his name Stateside this term - most notably coming home fifth at Augusta.

Irish golf is on the crest of a wave at the moment with recent wins for Darren Clarke and Peter Lawrie. Have a few shillings on Padraig to keep Irish eyes smiling.
