Leeds United v Doncaster Rovers

May 23rd, 2008 | No Comments »

Eee-baa-guum. It´s Leeds United versus Doncaster Rovers in an all-Yorkshire League 1 Championship Play-Off Final, where Gary McAllister’s side will surely take all the beating.

Rovers and United delivered superb semi-final second leg performances to book their places at Wembley (Rovers winning 5-1 at home to Southend, United winning 2-0 at Carlisle). Donny fans and punters will be hoping they haven’t used up all of their goals in producing that stunning result.

With both teams clearly in top form a competitive contest is forecast but it is McAllister’s side who hold all the aces in terms of big game experience.

Leeds front man Dougie Freedman has plenty of experience of play-off finals and that is a huge plus for the Elland Road outfit.

Seven wins in their last nine games from McAllister’s men has seen the side return to the scintillating form which saw them start the season like a train.

Of course there are many who don’t believe that Leeds should be in the play-offs at all. Had it not been for the 15 point deduction they would have sailed into the Championship automatically.

Expect a huge Leeds travelling support to turn the Wembley game into a virtual home fixture for McAllister’s men - a factor that can only benefit them.

If you take the points handicap into consideration Leeds were 11 points better than Rovers over the course of the season and at odds of 6/5 to win in 90 minutes that makes them a sound bet indeed.

Bristol City v Hull City play off final

May 19th, 2008 | No Comments »

Bristol City have played some tremendous stuff this season and Gary Johnson´s in form side look a great bet with totesport at 11/10 to win the 2008 Championship play-off.

The Robins take on Hull City at Wembley on May 24th and are 15/8 to win the game in 90 minutes, but having the added security of extra time (and penalties if needs be) makes a greater appeal.

Wembley´s wide pitch will really suit the men from the West Country, who love to get the ball down on the deck. Anyone who saw the impressive fashion in which they came through their semi-final with Crystal Palace has to be further impressed with the pace and verve of their passing game.

Johnson deserves high praise for the way he has developed playmaker Lee Trundle into a footballer of genuine Premiership quality. Scouser Trundle has always had bags of ability but under Johnson he has shed a stone in weight and now has a determination and purpose to his game that he never showed at previous clubs.

His sublime left foot curling goal that effectively won the tie for the Robins will have Hull manager Phil Brown in concerned mood. That sort of skill is impossible to defend, as is the kind of free kick with which Michael McIndoe burst the back of the Palace net with to send them through.

Bristol also hold a psychological advantage over Hull having drawn away at the KC stadium last November and then beating them 2-1 at Ashton Gate in March. The Robins have sold their full ticket allocation and it would be no surprise to see the cider flowing freely as they raucously celebrate a return to the top flight after an absence of nearly 30 years.
