Royal Ascot Betting - Day 5

June 20th, 2009 | No Comments »

What a fantastic week it has been.  There’s been a real international flavour to proceedings with winners for Australia, France and the United States and today it seems as though it’s the turn of South Africa to take a valuable win as JJ The Jet Plane bids for glory in the 3.45pm Golden Jubilee Stakes.

Scenic Blast hacked up in the King Stands for Australia earlier in the week and there’s no reason why the Mike De Kock trained sprint star from South Africa can’t also take advantage of a weakish looking home field.  He’s battling it out for favourtism with Hong Kong raider Sacred Kingdom in the betting but his win at Windsor a few weeks ago gives JJ the edge here.

The final day of Royal Ascot has some huge betting races with plenty of runners going to post.  Kicking off with the Chesham Stakes at 2.30pm, Aiden O’Brien has the two early pace setters in the betting market with Beethoven and Emporer Claudius.  It looks like the weakest of the juvenile races this week and Wesley Ward’s Honor In Peace will also be well supported in the betting come race time.

The Hardwicke Stakes at 3.05pm sees Sir Michael Stoute’s 4yo Doctor Freemantle installed as firm favourite with totesport.  Fourth in the Derby last year he should appreciate this step back in trip but it could favour second favourite Campanologist more who was a course and distance winner here in the King Edward VII Stakes last year.

It’s sure to be one of the most frenetic betting heats of the week with the traditional cavalry charge of the Wokingham Stakes at 4.25pm.  28 runners go to post for this six furlong sprint and although Jimmy Styles heads the early prices at totesport it’s High Standing, trained by Willie Haggas and ridden by Ryan Moore that’s getting all the attention in the morning’s papers and is sure to go off shorter come this afternoon.

Totesport are going five places a quarter the odds in today’s Wokingham Stakes.

There’s another big field in the 5.00pm Duke of Edinburgh Stakes with Crackentorp heading the market in what looks like another competitive betting heat.  Hatton Flight looks the best of the rest looking for a four-timer under the steering of the impressive William Buick and Pires looks a big price around the 14/1 mark with totesport.

Last but not least the Royal Ascot meeting signs off with the stayers in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at 5.35pm.  Last years Queen Vase runner up Amerigo looks the one to beat here and tops the market at totesport just ahead of old-timer Carracciola for Nicky Henderson.

There’s a bumper day of totepool betting to be had as well.  Yesterday’s jackpot rolled over again just under £150k so we can expect a jackpot total of near £200k for today’s Royal Ascot meeting.  There’s 10% cashback on the tote placepot and also because it’s a Saturday there’s also 10% cashback on the scoop6, where a single winner of the win and bonus funds could scoop over £1/2!

Scoop6 Update

As you may well be aware of by now the scoop6 win fund was won last weekend by a single Internet punter.  They wished to remain nameless (good thinking) but have made the amazing decision that if they win the bonus race on Saturday they’ll dedicate all the winnings to the Royal British Legion.  The punter won £669,465.30 last Saturday when he correctly picked the six winners of the totescoop6.  This means he has a chance to win the bonus fund on Saturday, a staggering £2,755,923!

It really warms the cockles to think that someone could be so generous, especially in the current climate, so here’s big good luck to him on Saturday from us!

The bonus race has been announced and it’s the Racing Post Trophy from Kempton.  It’s always a good betting race and this year in no different, plus the added spice of someone going for £2.7 million if he picks the winner!  Favourite is the recently picked Pricewise of the Grand national in the Racing Post, Big Fella Thanks and if that’s where the bonus money goes it’s sure to be an aptly named horse if he obliges.

Saturday’s totescoop6 races:

Leg 1, Kempton  - 1.30pm
Leg 2, Newcastle - 2.20pm
Leg 3, Chepstow - 2.45pm
Leg 4, Kempton  - 3.10pm*
Leg 5, Newcastle - 3.30pm
Leg 6, Kempton  - 3.45pm

*Bonus race - Racing Post Chase

You can win the scoop6, simply pick the six winners of the above races for as little as a £2 stake.

Leg4, Uttoxeter - 2.50pm

On Saturday a single ticket of the totescoop6 won a record payout of £1,541,739 and will aim to add a further £2,469,009 by picking the winner of the bonus race this Saturday.

With this record bonus fund up for grabs, interest in the bet will again be massive on Saturday with customers looking for a crack at the bonus should the syndicate fail to land it.

With the excellent card from Newbury scheduled on Saturday, including the totesport.com Trophy, Game Spirit Chase and AON Chase likely to be amongst the legs, it’ll be an excellent chance to pick six winners in the live TV races.

Cheltenham Trials and Skybet Chase betting preview

January 23rd, 2009 | No Comments »

It’s the last chance for trainers up and down the country to give their festival hopefuls a prep run at the Gloucestershire track on Saturday on Festival Trials day. Add to that the always competitive Skybet Chase at Doncaster and there are plenty of races to get excited about betting on this weekend.

Only eight runners were declared for the Letherby and Christopher Chase at 2.35pm and looking down the runners it’s difficult to see any getting amongst the places in the totesport Gold Cup come March. Halcon Genelardais finished fourth in the Gold Cup last year and looks well in at the weights here with 10 lbs in hand of top weights Ollie Magern (50/1) and Snoopy Loopy (20/1). At 5/2 favourite here with totesport he surely has claims on the heavy going. Tidal Bay is an interesting runner and at 5/1 is probably best watched here to see if he gets the trip and will indeed take his chance in the Gold Cup in March.

In the Cleeve Hurdle, ante post World Hurdle favourite Punchestowns is an odds on shot at 8/11 with totesport. With the retirement of Inglis Drever Nicky Henderson’s young charge has a great chance of a festival success, but could be vulnerable here on heavy going and some seasoned campaigners to come up against. Front runner Lough Derg at 16’s is sure to take them off at a clip and it’ll be interesting to see how this suits Fair Along (7/1), a winner at Cheltenham’s December meeting and Hennessy favourite Big Buck’s (7/2) who is reverting to hurdles after unseating Sam Thomas back in November.

The Skybet Chase sees According to Pete take favourtism with totesport to head a big field at 13/2 with totesport. The Malcolm Jefferson trained 8 year old is on a five timer here and the ground and trip will suit and has taken to fences superbly after two places in handicap hurdles at the Cheltenham and Aintree festivals last spring. It’s 7/1 bar the field and it’s a really competitve betting heat. According to Pete will take all the beating but if the weight gets the better of him the Ferdy Murphy trained Noir Et Vert and Hot Weld will be waiting in the wings at 16/1 and 50/1 respectively. I’m especially interested to see how Hot Weld runs after a lay-off of 637 days since doing the Scottish national/Betfred Chase double in the Spring of 2007. It would be a hell of a training performance is he places on Saturday.

Horse Racing Betting at Ascot

January 16th, 2009 | No Comments »

As the countdown to Cheltenham continues there’s not too much to get excited about this weekend, with Saturday’s cards coming from Ascot, Haydock, Lingfield, Naas and Wincanton. There are plenty of betting opportunities as any Saturday, but most interest will be on the Victor Chandler Chase at Ascot.

Master Minded is the star of the show and it’s fair to say the small field is down to the two mile chasing superstar’s entry here.

The Tingle Creek winner and reigning Champion Chaser has two more runs scheduled before looking to retain his crown at Cheltenham in March. If he comes through tomorrow fine he’ll have one final prep run at Newbury in the Game Spirit in February.

The Paul Nicholls’ trained six your old is currently a 2/5 favourite for the Queen Mother Champion Chase with totesport and it’s no surprise that he’s another odds on shot tomorrow at Ascot. You can get 1/4 about his chances against four other runners Petit Robin (11/2), Or Noir De Somoza (9/1), Natal (25/1) and Mahogany Blaze (33/1).

This should be a foregone conclusion for the favourite and with each-way terms only placing the first two, there might be some value to be had in totesport’s win only betting without Master Minded. Petit Robin heads the betting in this market at 11/10 with David Pipe’s talking horse Or Noir De Somoza a 15/8 chance.

Cheltenham December Meeting Betting Preview - Day 2

December 12th, 2008 | No Comments »

After decent write ups for two winners on day one of the December meeting, concentration turns to Saturday’s big two races.

The 2m 5f Boylesports.com Gold Cup takes centre stage as the main betting heat of the day at 2.30pm. Imperial Commander looks to follow up his win here last month in the Paddy Power. The market leader is a 15/8 chance with totesport and still looks in at the weights to make it a memorable double for the Twiston-Davies stable.

Elsewhere, claims can be made for 16/1 chance Three Mirrors, who was giving weight to the winner when finishing fifth in the Paddy Power and goes off the same mark here this time.

Depending on the state of the weather, My Petra’s an interesting runner from the in-form Nicky Henderson stable. Two good wins including an eye catching reappearance over fences last time out at Ascot has seen the five your old earn a hike in the weights but could still be well in here. The biggest concern is over the going and as the rain comes the odds are currently on the drift, currently available at 14/1 with totesport.

The 3.05pm 2m 1f Boylesports.com International hurdle looks to be an entriguing Champion Hurdle trial with current ante post favourite in March Binocular, a 7/4 shot here. The Henderson trained bullet has shown imperious form since it’s defeat in the Supreme Novices at last years festival to Captain Cee Bee. Wins at Aintree and an impressive if unchallenged victory last time out at Haydock have seen the four year old’s price cut for this one and a win here will surely shorten his Champion Hurdle odds also.

Elsewhere, trio Crack Away Jack (4/1), Chomba Womba (11/2) and Katchit (4/1) will all be looking to capitalise on any weakness from the market leader. Katchit has shown little form so far this season but Saturday’s race will give us a better idea of his long term chances of defending his Champion Hurdle title in March.

I can’t let this piece go without a little mention of an old favourite and former winner of this race Harchibald. The Noel Meade trained 9 year old has struggled since winning the Fighting Fifth just over a year ago and the odds available of 28/1 could single the end of any serious Champion Hurdle aspirations.

Tingle Creek Betting Preview

December 4th, 2008 | No Comments »

The best two mile chasers in the business will do battle on Saturday at Sandown in the Tingle Creek.

Favourite to take the spoils is current champion chaser and highest rated horse in training, Master Minded. The Clive Smith owned and Paul Nicholls trained 5yo hacked up in the Queen Mother Champion Chase at the festival last March beating reigning champ Voy Por Ustedes 19 lengths.

Only stable-mate Twist magic ran in that race and was the winner of the Tingle Creek in 2007. After a disappointing return to the track in the William Haldon Cup at Exeter last month he couldn’t be backed with any confidence here and is a 12/1 shot with totesport in the non runner no bet market.

Tidal Bay looks the pick amongst the opposition to Master Minded at 11/4 NRNB. The Howard Johnson trained 2008 Arkle winner followed up with an impressive win at Aintree in April and a very strong display at Carlisle on its only outing this season, beating the field by 9 lengths at the beginning of November.

Master Minded will take the beating though and this sets up a fascinating race and what will be a competitive betting heat with the favourite an 8/13 shot with totesport NRNB.

Don’t forget, the scoop6 bonus fund has still to be won. That means, if you can pick the winners of all six races in the totescoop6 races this Saturday, you could be playing for the bonus fun the following week for a massive £1.5m million!

Hennessy Gold Cup Betting Preview

November 28th, 2008 | No Comments »

The Hennessy Gold Cup takes centre stage at Newbury on Saturday afternoon. Always a competitive affair, this is a hotly backed race at the best of times, made especially so this year with a favourite on the drift!

Current favourite in the non runner no bet market with totesport is Big Bucks at 5/1. The five year old’s been steadily on the drift over the last fortnight, after a nightmare for trainer Paul Nicholls last weekend and the beating of Battlecry at Cheltenham a fortnight ago raised question marks over the form. Big Bucks was a 2 1/4 length winner over Battlecry last April in the Mildmay Novices’ Chase at Aintree and the latter’s lacklustre display on his reappearance did little to encourage form backers.

So, who else can take the £100k prize on Saturday? Well, I like the look of Albertas Run. Although finishing third when beaten favourite in the aforementioned race at Aintree last season and running like a dog beaten 29 lengths by Tidal Bay in its reappearance this season, a return to the form that won it the Royal Sun Alliance at the festival in March will see it go close here. The negatives are reflected in the price at 10/1, but I’ll probably have a dabble each-way.

Elsewhere, a mention for Island Flyer. Carrying a featherweight 10 stone in the shape of Denis O ‘Regan it has the course form and talent to run a big race here.

Remember, 8 punters are going for the totescoop6 bonus this Saturday with the chosen race being the Hennessy. They’re are playing for a massive £1,529,525 in the bonus fund and remember, if it doesn’t get won this week it could be you next week!
